Are You SeriousAndrew Bird has always been highly respected and has held a captive audience with his story telling prowess, but it's with his new album, Are You Serious, that he has made a breakthrough record. Coming out via his new label home, Loma Vista Recordings (Spoon, St. Vincent, HEALTH), and produced by Tony Berg, the album propels him into a new category of American songwriters. It's his most direct lyrically to date with key contributions from Fiona Apple and Blake Mills.
Three years ago while traveling west to California to start a new life with his wife and young child they stopped at the family farm in rural Illinois for two weeks to catch their breath. The previous two years had been intense to say the least: raising a child in New York City as his wife battled a serious illness. With these dark days behind them he spent the next seven days on the front porch writing the lyrics for what became Are You Serious. It's a breakthrough for him in that it gets to the quick of the matter. This is the record he needed to make right now and is certain to put him in the leading class of American songwriter.
The album was put together with a rigor akin to a novelist or playwright and musically crafted like a wrecking crew session where you have to be good right in that moment. There's little folksy quaintness or whimsical flights of fancy. There's less wordplay and more intent to process some difficult times that he went through. From the album art, created by the godfather of conceptual art John Baldessari to foregoing his traditional writing process, Bird has emerged from challenging times and a new process with an album that may be his best.
The first single Capsized" begins to take you down the path that Bird so carefully crafted on the record, speaking from an unguarded point of view while keeping with the melodic, syntactic standards that he has held true to since the beginning of his career.1. Capsized

Hands Of GloryThe new record is the product of a pair of recording sessions prompted by the overwhelming response to Bird's "old-time" sets on recent tours. Reinterpreting songs from Break It Yourself and featuring covers of classic country tunes, these "old-time" performances find Bird and his full band playing to a single microphone with an entirely acoustic setup. Drawing inspiration from these sets, Hands of Glory features two brand new original tracks, a new interpretation of "Orpheo Looks Back" from Break It Yourself and covers of the Handsome Family, Alpha Consumer and others.1. Things Are Really Great Here, Sort Of... (Awaiting Repress)Things are Really Great Here, Sort Of .... is the latest self release by Andrew Bird, consisting of his versions of songs by a band he has loved for many years, The Handsome Family. The Handsome Family is husband and wife duo Brett and Rennie Sparks, who have collaborated as a couple for more than 20 years. Bird,
who has long been a fan and first covered their track "Don't Be Scared" in 2003, toured with the band last fall and was inspired to begin working on this collection. Things are Really Great Here, Sort Of... includes an updated rendition of fan favorite "Don't Be Scared," along with "Far From Any Road," the main title theme
song for the HBO series True Detective. Along with his band, The Hands of Glory (featuring Tift Merritt, Alan Hampton, and Eric Heywood), Andrew recorded these songs in May 2014 and released them a mere month later.1. Cathedral in the Dell

Weather SystemsDescribed by Pitchfork in 2003 as "music for the ages that demands to be heard", the songs on Andrew Bird's second solo album reveal themselves at a confidant, unhurried pace reflecting the thoughtfulness with which they were conceived. Weather Systems originated in a barn converted to studio/living space in remote western Illinois, as creating music was becoming central to Bird's everyday life. The virtuoso instrumentalist employs violin, glockenspiel, organ, whistling, and tape loops to set the scene for the intimate, haunting stories he tells through his lyrics. It's a lush, gorgeous collection of seven original songs plus Bird's own adaptation of a Galway Kinnell poem and a Handsome Family cover "Don't Be Scared" (which Andrew recorded again on his 2014 covers album, 'Things Are Really Great Here Sort Of"), showcasing his gift for conveying subtle emotional states purely through music. Originally released in 2003, Weather Systems is now available on vinyl for the first time (150 gram/re-mastered for vinyl) through Wegawam Music with reimagined art by Jay Ryan.1. First Song

Bon IverBon Iver is Justin Vernon returning to former haunts with a new spirit. The reprises are there, solitude, quietude, hope and desperation compressed, but always a rhythm arises, a pulse vivified by gratitude and grace notes. The winter, the legend, has faded to just that, and this is the new momentary present.
Bon Iver is often equated with just me, says Vernon, but you are who surrounds you, and for Bon Iver I wanted to invite those voices as musical catalysts. Thus on the track Beth/Rest and throughout the album, we hear the pedal steel of Greg Leisz (Lucinda Williams, Bill Frisell), the uniquely layered low end of Colin Stetsons (Tom Waits, Arcade Fire) saxophones, the riffing of Mike Lewis (Happy Apple, Andrew Bird) altos and tenors, and the lush horns of C.J. Camerieri (Rufus Wainwright, Sufjan Stevens). Bon Iver regulars Sean Carey, Mike Noyce and Matt McCaughan contributed vocals, drums and production, Rob Moose (Antony and the Johnsons, The National) helped with arranging and added strings, and fellow members of Volcano Choir, Jim Schoenecker and Tom Wincek provided processing.
Bon Iver was recorded and mixed over the course of three years at April Base Studios, a remodeled veterinarians clinic located in rural Fall Creek, Wisconsin.1. Perth

OdysseySony Music Masterworks has announced the release of ODYSSEY, the extraordinary label debut album from The Accidentals.
Named among Yahoo Music's Top 10 Bands to Watch in 2017, ODYSSEY affirms The Accidentals place among contemporary music's most original and adventurous new bands. Multi-instrumentalists Sav Buist and Katie Larson - joined onstage and in the studio by drummer Michael Dause - have crafted a genre all their own, fueled by their uniquely limitless approach to musicality and songcraft. Lyrically powerful songs like Earthbound and the potent title track see the band embracing their choice to lead an unconventional life with all its many surprising twists and turns.
Co-produced by Buist, Larson, and Dause with engineer Jason Lehning (Mat Kearney, Guster, George Jones, Alison Krauss) at Asheville, NC's Echo Mountain Recording, ODYSSEY sees The Accidentals joined by such friends and fans as acoustic guitar maestra Kaki King, bassist - and fellow Michigander - Dominic John Davis (Jack White, Beck), Carbon Leaf guitarist Carter Gravatt, Keller Williams and The Decemberists' Jenny Conlee, who spent three days in the studio alongside the band, lending her distinctive organ to a number of the album's key tracks. The Accidentals' inviting spirit of shared creativity is perhaps best represented by the album's audacious first single, KW, showcasing the inimitable guitar work of Keller Williams, whose own virtuosic genre-agnostic approach towards music making inspired the song in the first place.
The Accidentals' adventure began in their hometown of Traverse City, MI, when Larson, a sophomore cellist, and Buist, a junior violinist, were paired for a high school orchestra event. The gifted young musicians became fast friends and before long, bandmates. Having both grown up in musical families with professional pianists for fathers and vocalists for mothers, their shared influences bounced between classical, jazz, bluegrass, country, alt-rock, and the obscure.
The past five years have seen The Accidentals perform over a thousand live shows, including headline dates, festival sets, and shared stages along such like-minded acts as Martin Sexton, Brandi Carlile, Andrew Bird, The Wailers, Joan Baez and others. 2015's SXSW debut saw them hailed by Billboard for displaying a genre-hopping range of influences and some smart songwriting skills to go with their abundant musical chops.1. "I really felt like I was witnessing history... in a couple of years we'll be talking about,
'Man, I saw him at this intimate little show." - NPR
"Grand and transcendent... the layers of beautiful sound, homage to Japanese culture,
and use of violin make 151a a dreamy, pocket-sized symphony, perfect for anyone
needing a lift." - BUST
"Sumptuous orchestral brilliance... It's a stunningly good record, not merely chirpy,
zany, and whimsical-but also packed full of harmonious, heart-stopping beauty. If you
can imagine ELO's very best moments combined with Andrew Bird and a bit of weird
Bjork introspection-well, even that doesn't really do it justice. Apart from Pet Sounds,
perhaps, I can't think of a record that's as singly captivating in its sonic beauty." - THE PORTLAND MERCURY

of thinking about production and melody that I've yet to hear a bad song from him." -

"The music is off-kilter, particularly the opening chants and swirl of guitar and drums.
The middle section, though, takes a more even-keeled approach to pop, balancing the
looped whistles with peaceful, yet evocative vocals."
- CONSEQUENCE OF SOUND
"A weightless, cartwheeling, electro-pop romp that's all zz and no fuss" - SPIN
Violinist, singer, and composer Kishi Bashi is slated to release his new album on
April 29, 2014. The album entitled "Lighght" (pronounced "Light") continues and
expands the sound of his critically acclaimed debut, "151a" - which earned Kishi Bashi
the *title* of "Best New Artist" by NPR. Since the profoundly successful release of
"151a" two years ago, Kishi Bashi has toured relentlessly, captivating audiences across
the globe with his loop-based live show, and fostering a groundswell of devotees.
"151a" was crafted over a four-year period while Kishi Bashi was touring and recording with Regina Spektor, Sondre Lerche, and of Montreal (where he was a full-time
member and co-producer). In late 2012, after the success of "151a", Kishi Bashi
decided to focus solely on his own music and began composing the new material
which has become "Lighght".
"Lighght" takes its title from the one-word poem by minimalist poet Aram Saroyan.
As Kishi Bashi explains, "The poem's blatant assault on literary convention and
classical form was attractive to me." It is apparent that such an approach informed
the new album, which has both broadened and redened his classical foundations.
"Though I have studied classical composition, I prefer to take an unconventional path when it comes to creating and thinking about music," says Kishi Bashi.
Though violin remains his primary instrument and songwriting muse, Kishi Bashi has
expanded his palette to include more diverse and nuanced instrumentation. Bright
and soaring avant-pop songs are prevalent, as are Eastern-tinged arrangements,
gentle ballads, Philip Glass inspired improvisations, and more than a few moments
that irt with 70s prog (in the tradition of ELO or Yes).

Two MatchsticksThe Wooden Birds' Two Matchsticks follows-up their critically acclaimed 2009 debut Magnolia. The Wooden Birds are fronted by American Analog Set founder and Broken Social Scene collaborator/touring member Andrew Kenny.
The album was recorded in a converted bedroom studio in Kenny's Austin home and mixed at Resonate Studio with producer Louie Lino (Nada Surf). It features a special guest appearance by Death Cab For Cutie's Ben Gibbard along with members of Ola Podrida.
While Two Matchsticks keeps the percussive affects of The Wooden Birds' debut, the band drew on the strengths of their live show in writing the album, making it a stronger record sonically, more driven, upbeat and fuller than their previous efforts.

Like the wild goose that the Portland-based trio are named after, the members of Greylag have all undertaken amazing journeys, migrating as if by homing instinct from different parts of the US, to create a self-titled debut album that s the latest must-have slice of verdant, far-reaching Americana. Greylag is rich in melody, mood and detail with a range that mirrors the distance between their individual birthplaces, creating a personal twist on some timeless musical traditions, embracing electric and acoustic with a sound that s both subtle and forceful.
Meet Andrew Stonestreet (lead vocal, acoustic guitar, originally from West Virginia), Daniel Dixon (lead guitar and other stringed things, keyboards, from Northern California) and Brady Swan (drums, from Texas). The venerated Phil Ek (Band of Horses, Fleet Foxes, Modest Mouse, The Shins) produced the album at Seattle s Avast! Studio, who clearly knows a sublime enterprising combination of roots and rock music when he hears it.
The name Greylag looks and sounds strong but has developed more meaning for the band - It s a wild goose, from which all domestic geese originate, so it s the first survivor, and it s still wild, and doing things its own way - the lag part refers to it being the last bird to migrate. It sits back and watches. We love the connotation.1. Another

The Way We Are (Discontinued) (On Sale)Following their abstract masterpiece, The World I See, The Present returns with an album that delves ever deeper into the human psyche. Like an audio equivalent of Apocalypse Now, The Way We Are is by turns terrifying, enchanting, hallucinatory, and sharply focused. A psychedelic power-trio from a mythical dimension, The Present creates a strangely familiar music, as if they had already seen your dreams and your nightmares.
In order to define the music, it might help to list some of the things it is not: it is not a pop album, neither is it a classical or jazz album. It's not an ambient album or a rock album either, but there are elements of all of these within its dense musical structure. Touchstones include the music of La Monte Young, Dmitri Shostakovich, Wolfgang Voigt, Cluster, Black Dice, Claude Debussy, Aphex Twin, Can, Arthur Russell, Boredoms, and Brian Eno-- and yet it sounds like none of these.
What it is: a kaleidoscopic trip influenced by New York City, the ocean, mountains, the sun and the trees, Andy Warhol, Yukio Mishima, David Lynch, Friedrich Nietzsche, Buddhist mantra, mass transit, cats, birds and life. Life in all its myriad complexity and confusions, in all its transcendent beauty and its horrendous brutality.
Their live show has been described as more of a sensory experience than a mere matter of listening and it's the title track-- a 35-minute epic the likes of which has not been heard since the glory days of Popul Vuh-- that best captures the band's extraordinary intensity.
Once again this work is a collaboration with the artist Andrew Kuo, whose unique vision formed the cover of The World I See and whose work provides the visual counterpoint to The Present's sonic creation. Together, they make a totality that reflects so intensely and so clearly The Way We Are.Medman
