2017's The Optimist is Anathema's first album since 2014's spellbinding Distant Satellites and contains the band's darkest, most challenging and unexpected material.

Recorded in Winter 2016 at Attica Studio in Donegal and Castle of Doom Studios in Glasgow with producer Tony Doogan (Mogwai, Belle & Sebastian, Super Furry Animals) at the helm. Doogan's influence is instantly tangible as for the first time in years Anathema recorded as a live band for an album, capturing an energy normally only present on stage. A technique that should be welcomed by fans aware of the band's supreme live power - previously captured on the celebrated concert film, Universal.

    We're Here Because We're Here

    Album mixed by Steven Wilson

We're Here Because We're Here is the eighth studio album by British band Anathema, released on 31 May 2010. The working title of the album was Horizons. The album was mixed by Steven Wilson of Porcupine Tree.

Ville Valo of the band HIM recorded vocals for the song Angels Walk Among Us.[1] The title of the album is taken from a song of the same name that was sung in the Allied trenches of World War I to the tune of Auld Lang Syne.

It is the last album to feature keyboarist Les Smith.

Response from the critics was generally positive. The album was proclaimed Prog Album of the Year by Classic Rock magazine, describing it as a flawless, life-affirming comeback and a gold-plated contender for album of the year.

Paradise Lost are a heavy metal band formed in 1987 in Halifax, England. Along
with country mates anathema and my dying bride, they are credited for creating
the subgenre known as death/doom metal. With the release of the albums icon
(1993) and draconian times (1995), Paradise Lost also became known as pioneers
of Gothic metal, and have been noted as an influence on bands such as Katatonia,
Opeth, and lacuna coil. Shades of god begins to integrate clean melodies &
quieter passages that mark the band's transitioning sound, including as i die,

ANATHEMA'S PIONEERING SONGWRITER DANIEL CAVANAGH RELEASES DEBUT SOLO ALBUM

Riding the waves of his success with Anathema's latest album 'The Optimist', which includes a worldwide headline tour, multiple summer music festivals and an Album of the Year nomination for the 2017 Progressive Music Awards, Daniel Cavanagh releases his debut solo album, Monochrome.

Inspired by internal feelings of love and loss, 'Monochrome' is a deeply reflective and personal offering. Cavanagh elaborates: The album has a late night, candlelit feeling, evoking the light of dusk as the summer sun sinks below the horizon, setting the scene for thoughts and meditations that many people will relate to.

A lot of this material could easily have made it on to the last Anathema album or any future album; that's how highly the band rate it. There are several highlights: The Exorcist and The Silent Flight of the Raven Winged Hours are among some of my best works of the last decade. Taking them from the band was not an easy decision but I am glad; they're so personal as to not need more input.

Monochrome features Anneke Van Giersbergen - ex-vocalist for The Gathering, who has since sung with Devin Townsend, Árstíðir, Anathema and Arjen Lucassen - and the exceptionally talented Anna Phoebe provides violin on three of the album tracks. Recorded at Grammy Award-winning Parr Street Studios, engineered by Andrea Wright, mastered by Anathema's Daniel Cardoso, and with artwork by illustrator Danny Branscombe, this album is stacked to be a special addition to the Kscope family.

Something Else!!!! The Music Of Ornette Coleman

This 1958 debut recording by the Ornette Coleman Quintet, which featured Coleman on his trademark white plastic alto, Don Cherry on trumpet, Billy Higgins on drums, Walter Norris on piano, and Don Payne on bass, shook up the jazz world -- particularly those musicians and critics who had entered the hard bop era with such verve and were busy using the blues as a way of creating vast solo spaces inside tight and short melody lines. Something Else!!!! is anathema to that entire idea, and must have sounded like it came from outer space at the time. First, Coleman's interest was in pitch, not being in tune. His use of pitch could take him all over -- and outside of -- a composition, as it does on Invisible, which begins in D flat. The intervals are standard, but the melodic component of the tune -- despite its hard bop tempo -- is, for the most part, free. But what is most compelling is evident in abundance here and on the next two tunes, The Blessing and Jayne: a revitalization of the blues as it expressed itself in jazz. Coleman refurbished the blues framework, threaded it through his jazz without getting rid of its folk-like, simplistic milieu. In other words, the groove Coleman was getting here was a people's groove that only confounded intellectuals at the time. Coleman restored blues to their classic beginnings in African music and unhooked their harmonies. Whether the key was D flat, A, G, whatever, Coleman revisited the 17- and 25-bar blues. There are normal signatures, however, such as Chippie in F and in eight-bar form, and The Disguise is in D, but in a strange 13-bar form where the first and the last change places, altering the talking-like voice inherent in the melodic line. But the most important thing about Something Else! was that, in its angular, almost totally oppositional way, it swung and still does; like a finger-poppin' daddy on a Saturday night, this record swings from the rafters of the human heart with the most unusually gifted, emotional, and lyrical line since Bill Evans first hit the scene. ~ Thom Jurek, Rovi

Sublime Sound: Mobile Fidelity Reissue Corrects the Dry Sound That Plagues Previous Editions

Flamenco-Themed 1960 Set Develops Synergy Between Orchestrations and Melancholic Jazz Phrasings

Urge by Davis to Develop Techniques Possessed by Forbearers Finds Him Expanding Palette, Spinning Webs of Lyrical Sound and Emotion

Kind of Blue, Milestones, Round About Midnight, Four & More, and In a Silent Way Also Available from Mobile Fidelity

Miles Davis and Gil Evans bridged styles and collaborated on high-concept projects a total of three times during their celebrated career. For their final act, they created Sketches of Spain, a peak moment in each luminarys career and a transformative album that weds Spanish themes, lush orchestrations, romantic timbres, and Davis increasingly lyrical methods in a tender ceremony that continues to resonate more than five decades after its original release.

Part of Mobile Fidelitys Miles Davis catalog restoration series, the genre-defying 1960 classic has been given the ultimate white-gloves treatment. Mastered from the original master tapes and pressed at RTI, this exquisite 180g LP significantly expands the soundstage that frames the orchestra and digs deep to eradicate a dryness that many critics have found as an anathema to its overall enjoyment. Here, at last, is the full-figured perspective long deserved by the woodwinds, strings, and percussion, all of which come alive with previously unheard definition and detail.

Indeed, in its three-decade-plus history, Mobile Fidelity has never been prouder to have the honor of handling efforts as important as Davis key recordings. Its why the labels engineers have taken every available measure to insert listeners into the space occupied by Davis, bassist Paul Chambers, drummer Jimmy Cobb, percussionist Elvin Jones, and the 18-piece orchestra. With both Evans and Davis attracted to the blues undercurrents permanently entrenched in the Spanish flamenco strains, listeners can finally wholly detect the myriad microdynamic tonalities, brooding ostinato devices, and minor pedal points that stamp the compositions with divine sensibility and goffered effect.

Multi-note motifs, brief improvisational solos, fanfare sweeps, and contrapuntal exchanges inform the flamenco-spiced pieces, but so do unconventionally voiced instruments that come into full relief on this reissue. Davis Harmon-muted trumpet is abetted by an assortment of bassoons and French horns that create pleasing contrasts and sounds (pp, mf, ppp) that get to the heart of Sketches of Spain: splashes of color. Seldom, if ever, did Davis ever so expressively and liberally paint with color. And in Evans, he has a likewise-minded partner to help draw out variegated shades, adamantine layers, and striated distinctions.

Whether its the somber mood piece of the standout Concierto de Aranjuez (Adagio), renowned forDavis flugelhorn performance, or the folktale-based Solea, Mobile Fidelitys enhanced Sketches of Spain transfixes with playing, ideas, and innovations that remain exclusive to this incomparable record.

Time Is Over One Day Old

Bear In Heaven's new album is aptly titled Time is Over One Day Old. It's a record with a visceral
relationship to time and its processes.Where invulnerability and ambition can support you as you grow,
at some point they become dead weight, and being true to yourself means casting them off, starting anew.
This plays out as a powerful analogy for the band across the arc of it's career.

They've always made intriguing records, here especially. It's easy to see why musicians fall hard for this
band. They entice and envelop you. Any Bear In Heaven song will most likely greet you with a provocative
beat, textural synthesizers and unassuming but adeptly supportive bass and guitar, all exquisitely
arranged and glistening.Jon Philpot's high, smooth, strong voice is so tightly wound into the music that
it can be easy to overlook the lyrics, Bear In Heaven's capacious third dimension. Philpot is a center-seeking, contemplative writer who captures the fleeting thoughts that underscore our emotional lives, the
interactions with the world that are both difficult to express and anathema in daily conversation.

While all of this can be said of any Bear In Heaven album, each varies wildly in tone and approach. 2007's
Red Bloom of the Boom is ambitious and experimental. Beast Rest Forth Mouth(2009)was a pivotal record
that still feels important, seductive and intense. On their 2012 LP I Love You, It's Cool the structural and
musical ideas are challenging, and masterfully developed. For Time is Over One Day Old,we witness the
band once again turning their gaze inward and prioritizing their evocative abilities in line with or even
slightly ahead of technical skills. It feels very much in the tradition of BRFM in that way. It's beautiful; it's
    moving.

Here Philpot and Adam Wills are more deeply collaborative than ever. This album is darker at times,
louder than their others; it feels personal and direct."If I Were To Lie"places Wills' bass groove front and
center,"Demon" is riveting and propulsive in spite of its dark pointed lyric, and"They Dream"dissolves
into three and a half minutes of deeply satisfying ambient synth work in its second half.Wills has always
been the bands anchor, providing rock solid, rhythmic bass lines and guitars that blur the boundaries of
Philpot's synth. Though in moments such as the final track, "You Don't Need The World," Wills cuts
through with an audacious, biting guitar hook. It's a great culmination of the album's sense of release.
This album isn't about being dark, it's about releasing darkness and frustration.

When bands age well, their vitality takes shape. They wear, but with intention. They trim excesses.
Throughout this album you'll hear a band at peace with themselves. They've learned to cut back on that
which is merely impressive and to concentrate on simply what is crucial. For Philpot this is about making
something lasting. "A lot of shedding, getting rid of layers and preconceptions breaking up with old
ways of thinking, old ways of being, starting to look at this thing in a new way and finding something
positive."The result is a record that will stay with you.

The Crestfallen' was the band's first release for Peaceville and contained reworked tracks from their 'All Faith is Lost' demo as well as new material, clearly showing a band with an exceptional grasp for melody and atmosphere in their brooding doom-heavy compositions and poetic landscapes; with effortless transitions between brutality (accentuated by the 'growled' vocals of then singer Darren White) and beauty on tracks such as 'The Sweet Suffering' and the now classic 'They Die'. This set the stage for their debut full-length LP, 'Serenades', further expanding upon this captivating formula and showing Anathema's diversity and body of influences stretching way beyond the confines of metal.

Anathema formed in Liverpool in the summer of 1990 & grew to become a major force in the doom metal genre with their early works, before exploring more rock & progressive elements over time to great success.

'Pentecost III' was released in early 1995 & was recorded at the infamous Academy Studios in Yorkshire UK. It featured classic heavy & often hypnotic doom metal, as well as a reworking/ re-recording of the Memento Mori track from the 'Iliad' of Woes demo, plus the hidden track '666'.

This was the last release that vocalist Darren White appeared on, before leaving the band to form The Blood Divine with various members of the original Cradle Of Filth line up. Awaken (Out of Stock)

The Blood Divine was a British Gothic metal band, founded in the summer of 1995 by Paul Allender, brothers Paul and Benjamin Ryan, after the three had recently left UK extreme metallers Cradle of Filth. They were joined by the recently ousted Anathema singer Darren White, & then recruited drummer William A. 'W.A.S.' Sarginson and bassist Steve Maloney before being quickly signed up by Peaceville Records.

The debut album 'Awaken' was recorded in early 1996 at Academy Studios in West Yorkshire UK (My Dying Bride, Paradise Lost, Anathema), and was released later that same year. This quickly led to intensive livework, touring throughout Europe with Cathedral and label mates, My Dying Bride.

With their expertly crafted compositions of rich, classic metal riffs and sweeping melodic passages, plus Ben Ryan's gothic & at times psychedelia-tinged keyboard arrangements backing up Daz White's perfectly fitting vocal delivery, 'Awaken' was greatly received upon release, as the band's profile swiftly grew.

In what was considered somewhat of a supergroup, The Blood Divine recorded 2 albums of highly individualistic gothic rock/doom metal with strong keyboard atmospherics & prog elements, before disbanding in 1998, with Paul Allender rejoining Cradle of Filth.

My Dying Bride have been the leading light of doom metal since their debut album As The Flower
Withers was released on Peaceville Records back in 1992. Influenced by acts such as Celtic Frost
and Candlemass, the band's heavy atmospherics have carved a huge worldwide following over the
years and they remain at the pinnacle of the genre and one of the most instantly distinguishable
    metal bands.

The Angel and the Dark River, the band's third studio album, was released in 1995 and is considered one of the best MDB/gothic doom releases. It was recorded at the infamous Academy Studios (Paradise Lost, Anathema, Cradle of Filth) in Yorkshire, UK, with long-time associate Mags.

Expanding upon the strong mix of atmosphere and heavy doom riffing of previous albums, The Angel and the Dark River was full of sprawling emotional epic tracks with flowing dynamics. The album also saw the band venturing further into clean vocal territory and to great acclaim.

The Fall Of Hearts is the first record to feature new drummer Daniel 'Mojjo' Moilanen and with the addition of their recently recruited guitarist Roger Öjersson (Tiamat), who came in just in time to sprinkle some blistering solos on the album, Katatonia will continue to push their musical boundaries beyond their roots in the metal scene while drawing in new fans from across the musical spectrum like peers such as Opeth and Anathema have also done, cementing Katatonia's place as one of the most revered and cherished of all bands in the world of modern heavy music.

Katatonia return with Dethroned & Uncrowned their debut release on Kscope (Peaceville's sister label), home to Steven Wilson, Anathema and most recently Wisdom of Crowds, the new project from Bruce Soord of The Pineapple Thief and Katatonia's very own Jonas Renske.

In August 2012 Katatonia released Dead End Kings, their ninth studio album. The album was the band's most successful to date and cemented the Swede's position as masters of darkened metal. Dead End Kings was released on the Peaceville label, the band's home for the past 14 years.

Many of the ecstatic reviews Dead End Kings received commented on the fact that the album marked another step in the band's journey towards a more progressive sound. Dethroned & Uncrowned allows them to explore these elements of the record further as they have re-recorded & reworked the album, creating new moods and textures while still staying truthful to the core of the songs.

Paradise Lost formed in Halifax, West Yorkshire in 1988 and are known for being the founders of the Gothic Death/Doom Metal genre; a style fully brought into existence with their genre-defining second album, the highly influential 'Gothic'.

Having released 2 albums, including 'Gothic', for the UK's Peaceville Records and later helping to establish Peaceville as home to the finest trio of UK doom bands (alongside My Dying Bride and Anathema), Paradise Lost then signed with felow UK label, Music For Nations which eventually led to the band breaking through to mainstream rock and metal audiences as their style evolved, becoming one of the UK's most essential metal exports around the globe in the process.

'Lost Paradise' was the band's debut album, released in 1990 and one of the early highlights in the formative years of Peaceville. Featuring more death metal influences, Paradise Lost created a dark
and atmospheric style of brutal death metal, as opposed to one based on speed. The album was recorded at Academy Studios (My Dying Bride, Anathema, Cradle of Filth) in Yorkshire, England.

Katatonia was formed in Stockholm, Sweden in 1991 by Jonas Renkse and Anders Nyström.

The album was recorded at Unisound Studios, April 1993 and released later that same year. Engineering and mixing was handled by Dan Swano (Opeth, Marduk,
Dissection). This early incarnation of Katatonia contained a more doom/black metal approach, whilst always keeping the trademark sorrowful & hypnotic guitar melodies which are still evident today. The album exudes an atmosphere of utter melancholy, accentuated by the growled, despairing vocals of Jonas. Katatonia quickly became part of the leaders of the gothic doom movement alongside top UK acts Paradise Lost, My Dying Bride and Anathema.
