    Made In Germany

There is a lovely moment in La Krautoma, after the surf music intro gives way to a strange Peter Leopold drum solo and moves on, that the sound begins to mutate into early-'70s Hawkwind, a gleeful nod from one notable space rock outfit to another. La Krautoma is more than that, though; it's a six-minute distillation of acid rock, space rock, and Krautrock that shows the band's knowledge of their own history. It is also an eyebrow-raising moment in the midst of this particular, which spends more time getting into the same space as mid-'70s Europop, providing an antimatter universe version of an average Eurovision song contest lineup.

    Hijack

Following a year long break from music and with a newfound spontaneous creative surge, Amon DÜÜl II awoke from the shadows of Herrsching s Lake Amersee in October 1974 to record Hijack in just two days of sessions. For these recordings almost all of the original line-up came together, which may be the reason why this LP is a late masterpiece and second to none of the other Amon DÜÜl II records. Hijack is simply good from back to front. It may not be as psychedelic as their early recordings, in fact it is more rock-orientated, but this does not knock its quality. In a detailed review, written for the German music magazine Sounds , Ingeborg Schober writes this about Hijack : A new LP by Amon DÜÜl II is always like X-mas for me. Once again the Munich freaks have presented us a wonderful record of great musical variety. This one will surely get us through another year .

    Bardo Pond (Picture Disc)

Formed in 1989 in Philadelphia by the guitar-wielding Gibbons brothers, Bardo Pond's drug-inspired space rock-complete with droning guitars, heavy distortion, feedback, reverb, and white noise-soon made them cornerstones of the Psychedelphia scene (Aspera, Asteroid No. 4, Azusa Plane) and the same warped galaxy as bands like Hawkwind, Amon Duul II, Spacemen 3 and Mogwai.

Now two decades and many albums later, Bardo Pond are still drinking the water in Philly and this latest eponymous album, released in 2010, is just one of its happy consequences. The album eddies in a whirlpool of country psych, with Isobel Sollengberger's vocals braving the acid-tainted rapids. Picture disc in PVC sleeve with insert.

Formed in 2011, Headless Kross are Tommy Duffin (ex Atomgevitter and The Process) on guitar, Jonny Montgomery (ex Phlange) on drums, and Derek Sexton (ex Ultimo Dragon and Order of the Black Cross) on bass and vocals. Tommy and Jonny had been practicing for a few months before they recruited Derek.

Their first album Bear, recorded at Tommy's 16 Ohm Studio, was released in 2011, and was the Bone Reader's Best Unsigned/Independent Album of 2011. The following summer they released the Demises EP on limited numbered CDs, and in early 2013 they released a split 7 with Belfasts War Iron. Later that year Head of Crom released a split 12 with Lazarus Blackstar. The Headless Kross side was a 17 minute epic mutation of Amon Duul IIs Deutsch Nepal, which was described as being as impressive as it is expansive by the Sleeping Shaman webzine. Rock-A-Rolla magazine claimed it was ...something precious few would attempt and even fewer could do justice to, but this Glasgow three-piece somehow pull it off.

    Heat Leisure III & IV

Heat Leisure is a collective centered around the Carney brothers of Pontiak, Greg Fox and Alexandra Drewchin of Guardian Alien, Steve Strohmeier of Beach House, and Robert J. Otten III. Their music takes a freewheeling approach to psychedelia with obvious nods to Amon DÜÜl II, Can and the Grateful Dead. For this, their second gathering and recording at the Carney s farm in Virginia, the group recruited the legendary Merry Prankster and Grateful Dead associate Ken Babbs, who emceed the Dead s mythical Veneta, OR gig in 1972 that became Sunshine Daydream, to contribute a shamanistic monologue to III, which occupies the first side of this, their first full-length vinyl release. The Carneys approached Babbs about collaborating with Heat Leisure t his Oregon farm on the last Pontiak tour. Heat Leisure s core principles are spontaneity, serendipity, and collaboration. The band employs frying amp distortion, a signature of Pontiak, as well as an array of drums, synthesizers, samplers, organs and a heavy dose of explorative improvisation by the musicians to create a highly lyrical album. Heat Leisure was conceived as a multi-media pursuit. While this release, III & IV, is an audio record, Heat Leisure I & II was released in the form of a short film/DVD with an accompanying 7 . The Carneys have said that future incarnations could take any form from performance and paintings, to sculptures or even digital mediums. Very much like the collaborative approach of the musicians to each session, they are keeping it open. III & IV was recorded late at night during a three day period during the first week of 2014 in Pontiak s Studio A, also on their farm, with Lain Carney doing most of the engineering. The session was recorded live to 1 tape, the reel old and decaying, which lead the tape to subtly speed up and slow down as the tape broke down and left residue on the tape heads. This organic effect adds to the woozy, surreal vibe of the music, and could not be replicated in a digital recording.

Playing on the same scene as bands like Amon Duul and
Can, krautrock band Guru Guru was formed in 1968 by one
of contemporary musics most talented drummers, Mani
Neumeier who, in addition to playing drums, was also the
bands vocalist / frontman. This album, recorded live at
Radio Bremen in 1971 features the 23-minute Der LSD
Marsch (The LSD March) from their debut album, UFO.
Here Neumeiers superlative drumming is given center
stage and one can hear why Mani has consistently earned
such high praise. The remaining two songs come from their
second album (1971s Hinten): the 22-minute extended
prog tribute to Bo Diddley (who knows what the inventor
of the Bo Diddley Beat would have thought of this), and
the aptly titled Space Ship - an extensive sonic trip of 15+ minutes (!) only found on the bonus CD.

Playing on the same scene as bands like Amon Duul and Can, German prog rock band Guru Guru was formed in 1968 by one of contemporary music's most talented drummers, Mani Neumeier who, in addition to playing drums, was also the band's vocalist / frontman. By the time this album was recorded in 1972, bassist Uli Trepte had left the band to play with Neu! and Faust and was replaced with Bruno Schaab of Night Sun (the stellar German prog metal band). Black Mountain (10th Anniversary Deluxe Edition) (On Sale)

    Limited Edition Grey Vinyl

It's only a clichÉ because it's true, but the greatest records are timeless. Black Mountain's self-titled debut
album is just such a record. It is a new classic rock, with reference points arcane and clear, its sound fresh,
unfamiliar and irresistible. The work of a small collective of musicians operating from Vancouver, Canada,
far from any industry buzz but firmly in the eye of their own storm of creativity, Black Mountain's debut
album was, of course, a beginning, but it also marked an ending.

Begun as the fourth album for Jerk With A Bomb, the 4-track bedroom project turned non-rock band led
by Stephen McBean that preceded Black Mountain, the songs grew from skeletal sessions cut by McBean
and Josh Wells and honed on the road in empty North American clubs along with Amber Webber. "We'd lay
down the bed tracks, the guitars and drums," remembers McBean. "Matt [Camirand, bass] joined, and we
changed the band name after a dream of how life could be different in the B section between Black Flag and
Black Sabbath. Josh's roommate Jeremy [Schmidt, keys] was lurking about. We asked him if he wanted to
add some synth bleeps or whatever. He came back with all these orchestrated keyboard parts, and we said,
'Oh, you should probably join the band now.'"

They cut the album at the Hive and their jam space in Vancouver, recording in "a big cement room with a
tall ceiling, nice boomy acoustics, lots of natural reverb, on an 8-track reel-to-reel tape recorder." During the
sessions, these elemental first tracks found their true shape: wry & giddy, hypnotic & gracefully heavy, the
dark and powerful blues, and mysterious chugging murk.

The album's initial success saw the band take to the road, leaving their Vancouver enclave for stages across
the world. "It felt like there was a real explosion of excitement at shows," remembers McBean. "We wouldn't
write setlists, we'd just feel the energy in the room and call things out, jamming on songs like 'No Hits' and
'Druganaut.' It was a good time for live rock'n'roll: DJ booths were being transformed back to drum risers,
people were digging 20 minute heady jams and there were bands like Comets On Fire and Oneida out there
who we felt kinship with. I was into Faust and Amon Duul but had no idea of the scene of modern bands
doing that stuff. And then we met those bands, and it was cool. And then we went on tour with
    Coldplay and the adventures continued.

Their jaunt across the world as guests of perhaps the biggest band in the world is a tale for another time,
perhaps: the start of Black Mountain's next chapter, and all that followed. For now, savor the compact,
spacey brilliance of that cosmic, heavy and subtle debut album, expanded now with a raft of delicious bonus
tracks scavenged from the Black Mountain Army archives.
