American Beauty (On Sale)The Most American Folk-Rock Ever Made: Indelible Harmonies, Spare Playing, and Gorgeous Textures Surround Masterfully Crafted Songs
Close Your Eyes As the Dead Serenade You in Your Room: MoFi Edition of American Beauty Epitomizes Realistic Space, Vocals, Instrumentation, and Ambience
Ranked #261 on Rolling Stone's List of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time: Includes "Truckin'," "Sugar Magnolia," "Friend of the Devil," "Ripple"
American Beauty is the most perfectly realized, superbly played, and openly natural folk-rock record ever released. They don't make albums like this anymore, but thankfully, Mobile Fidelity's extraordinary 180g 45RPM 2LP set allows you to experience this 1970 masterpiece with unrivaled intimacy, realism, detail, and perspective. The Dead might as well be sitting on a Persian carpet right in your living room.
The pinnacle of the Dead's studio output, American Beauty lives up to its name-as well as that of the "American Reality" ambigram on the iconic cover. Airy vocal harmonies blow like fresh breezes. Strummed acoustic guitars amicably intermingle with plaintive percussive beats. Warmth, relaxation, and poignancy envelop the performances and create sensations of bliss, peace, and honesty. Songs flower with majestic melodies and emotionally direct lyrics. It's a rare album that invites and makes you feel, restores one's faith, and renews one's appreciation for all life offers.
Mastered from the original master tapes and pressed on 180g LP at RTI, this deluxe analog set possesses seemingly limitless dynamics, reference-grade presence, and expansive soundstages. The seamless, effortless integration of the group's vocals has always been a high point of American Beauty, and when you hear it here, you'll want every record you own to sound half as good. Every member's distinctive singing resounds with tube-like clarity; the intended expressionism is as plain as day. Instruments, too, resonate in glorious Technicolor. The supple tension of Phil Lesh's bass lines, charismatic timbres of Jerry Garcia's pedal-steel fills, and interwoven dialogue between the pianos and percussion are rendered with lifelike scale and tone.
Made just months after its companion release, Workingman's Dead, the San Francisco legends' second 1970 masterpiece furthers the former work's close-knit relationship between country and folk while adding extra rock and bluegrass currents. Understated amplified passages, graceful melodies, layered singing, and old-time string flavors-including mandolin work from masterful guest David Grisman-bestow the material with easygoing, comfortable vibes. Again taking advantage of the best songwriting of Robert Hunter's career, the Dead turns in its most collective studio performance, with every individual contributing equally and focusing on nothing but the songs at hand.
Indeed, Garcia doesn't even indulge in a single guitar solo on the record. A majority of fare lacks any significant instrumental breaks. The Dead recorded the foundations (drums, bass, acoustic guitars) of nearly every track live, which helps explain why American Beauty sounds so powerfully rich and clear. Coupled with the band's personal reflections of the circumstances surrounding them-Bob Weir's parents had died, Garcia's mother and Lesh's father were in the process of passing, Ron "Pigpen" McKernan's health was in decline-these characteristics combined to yield a purity of heart that exceeds that managed by Dead peers (and roots revivalist leaders) The Band and Bob Dylan.
From Garcia's breathtaking gospel-laden homage to his mother ("Brokedown Palace") to Lesh's healing salve in the form of the groove-based "Box of Rain," from Weir's jaunty and free-wheeling summer escape "Sugar Magnolia" to McKernan's eloquently simple homespun plea "Operator," all the way to the closing autobiographical anthem "Truckin'," American Beauty feels like the warm, spirit-infusing embrace of a loved one after a long journey away. Welcome home.

Life And Death of An American FourtrackerIn ten short years, John Vanderslice's musical legacy already leaves listeners with seven critically-acclaimed and carefully crafted albums. JV's meticulous consideration to color, warmth, and depth of sound (his all-analog recording studio, Tiny Telephone, contributing additionally as an instrument) as well as his sophisticated narrative lyrical content have secured his place in the canon of great American songwriters. Two MatchsticksThe Wooden Birds' Two Matchsticks follows-up their critically acclaimed 2009 debut Magnolia. The Wooden Birds are fronted by American Analog Set founder and Broken Social Scene collaborator/touring member Andrew Kenny.
The album was recorded in a converted bedroom studio in Kenny's Austin home and mixed at Resonate Studio with producer Louie Lino (Nada Surf). It features a special guest appearance by Death Cab For Cutie's Ben Gibbard along with members of Ola Podrida.
While Two Matchsticks keeps the percussive affects of The Wooden Birds' debut, the band drew on the strengths of their live show in writing the album, making it a stronger record sonically, more driven, upbeat and fuller than their previous efforts.
The most noticeable difference is the increased presence of members Leslie Sisson and Matt Pond who, in addition to singing backing vocals on the album, sing lead and duet with Kenny on some of the album's most memorable songs.1. Folly Cub

One Night Stand: Live at the Harlem Square is the second live album by the American singer-songwriter Sam Cooke. The album was originally released in June 1985 in the United States by RCA Records. Initially recorded in 1963 to be released as a live album entitled One Night Stand, the concert at the Harlem Square club (in Miami's historically African American neighborhood of Overtown) was not released until 1985. RCA Victor, at the time, viewed the album as too gritty and raw and possibly damaging to his pop image, and quietly kept the recordings in their archive.
The album is generally considered among the best live albums by contemporary music critics, and has been ranked in best-of music lists, including on Rolling Stone's list of The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

With a percussive score by Jule Styne, and solidly crafted lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, Gypsy stands out arguably as one of the two most perfect musicals ever created (the other one being Guys And Dolls). Over the years, it has been revived frequently, but Ethel Merman's larger-than-life portrayal remains the standard by which all others have to measure up. This was the first stereo recording of Merman, produced by legendary Broadway cast recording producer Goddard Lieberson and recorded at Columbia 30th Street Studios.

Poor David's AlmanackGuitar man David Rawlings leaves the Machine moniker behind for his third album, Poor David's Almanack, a wry mixture of acoustic and electric performances rich in ageless American vernacular. Gloriously captured on analog tape by studio wizards Ken Scott and Matt Andrews, the ten new songs took shape in a rollicking weeklong session at Woodland Sound Studios in Nashville, Tennessee where Rawlings and longtime compatriot Gillian Welch joined together with Willie Watson, Paul Kowert, Brittany Haas, Ketch Secor, and Taylor and Griffin Goldsmith to produce an album for all seasons.1. OVSE-MOV-588xAlan Parsons Project
StereotomyAlan Parsons Project is well known for building their albums around certain socio-demographic themes. Stereotomy (1985) deals with the way in which modern society molds the personality. At the time, Stereotomy was one of the first completely digitally recorded pieces of music, sporting a rare 'DDD' code on its first release.
The album is coherently balanced, its synthesized and orchestrated songs completing each another. The high octane Where's The Walrus? is a response to 'Mr. Laser Beam', analogy of Mr. Lee Abrams, an American radio personality. He accused the band having gone 'flat' in their last albums: he asked them 'Where's The Walrus?', meaning 'Where are the classic songs like The Beatles' I Am The Walrus?'.1. Stereotomy

Recycling The Blues & Other Related StuffMastered by Bernie Grundman from the Original Analog Master Tapes & Pressed at RTI!
American blues musician Taj Mahal, was born Henry Fredericks in New York in 1942. His music is a mix of blues, Caribbean styles, bluegrass and the music of Hawaii, where he lived for a number of years. Originally released in 1972, Recycling The Blues & Other Related Stuff contains seven live tracks and four studio recordings.
Guitar/piano playing rural blues revivalist Taj Mahal was quite a rarity in the late 1960s - a young black man who accurately revived classic country blues for a new generation of listeners. Mahal took an archival interest in folk blues while joining in during the early '60s. On this album, the first seven tracks were recorded live at the Fillmore West and the rest at Columbia's San Francisco studios with backup from the Pointer Sisters. The title Recycling the Blues & Other Related Stuff certainly sums up the album quite well - that's exactly what Taj Mahal has been doing for several years by this point!

Mention the name Bad Brains to any music fan today and you will get a jaw-dropping response! Considered by some to be the holy grail' of punk rock, Bad Brains are one of the definitive American punk groups who garner the same respect as the Sex Pistols, Black Flag, The Ramones and the The Clash. The Bad Brains iconic legacy brought a new dimension to music by melding punk and reggae into a innovative style that has yet-to-be copied. And with this new studio album, Bad Brains essentially returns to their core wit a raw analog-driven chaos produced by MCA (aka Adam Yauch) of the Beastie Boys.Build a Nation has clearly brought out the best in the band.
All original members, Dr. Know, Darryl Jennifer H.R. and Earl Hudson, deliver an explosive arsenal of riffage and bad ass bag of voices. Producer MCA recorded the album at the Beastie Boys' Oscilloscope studio in NYC. It is the first studio album released by the Oscilloscope laboratories, outside of Beastie Boys' albums. Sometimes reactionary, sometimes volatile, Bad Brains simply define the American punk experience.1. Give Thanks and Praises

CoveredTen years ago, a 22 year old songwriter entered a recording studio with producer Tucker Martine (My
Morning Jacket, Neko Case, Beth Orton) to make a record.
Poised with one of the greatest talents for carrying Appalachian music into new places, Sarah Siskind
penned a record in which every moment, every stitch thread perfectly. Recorded to 2-inch analog tape, Covered is a masterful record, in which American music and guitar icon, and one of Sarah's musical heroes, Bill Frisell plays a key role.
But amid plans for a national release, sinus illness struck and multiple surgeries followed, and Covered was instead released independently on a much smaller scale than originally planned. With little tour and press support, the album never earned its place in the hearts it could have...
A few years later, by chance, I came across a copy of Covered while digging into Frisell's catalog, for I also have a deep admiration for the music icon and couldn't get enough of his work. Looking back, I had no idea how much this album would shake me down; it quickly earned its place in my heart. I listened so much from then on that I wore out several copies, all the while pondering how such an amazing record could go largely unnoticed by the masses.
Four years passed, Sarah fully recovered from her sinus issues and set her sights high once again. She
went on to record her much lauded boutique double EP Studio.Living Room and followed it with widely-acclaimed Say it Louder, which earned her 2009 Nashville Music Awards' "Americana Album
of the Year." As she gained more and more attention, writing songs for Alison Krauss and the like, I listened along but still continued to wear out Covered, bewildered as to why it still wasn't grabbing more people with its poise.
Finally, yet still overdue, we at Chigliak give you Covered, reissued and released for the first time on
vinyl. Listen and let it shake you down.

Signs & SignifiersNamed as an artist you should know in 2011 by NPR, singer/songwriter JD McPherson makes his Rounder Records debut with the release of Signs & Signifiers which All Music calls a rockin', bluesy, forward-thinking album that subtly breaks the conventions of most vintage rock projects. McPherson is an artist with an unaffected take on vital American music and a voice that channels the spirit of Little Richard and James Brown.
The seductively kickass 12-song set finds this renaissance man/hepcat seamlessly meshing the old and the new, the primal and the sophisticated, on a work that will satisfy traditional American rock 'n' roll and R&B purists while also exhibiting McPherson's rarified gift for mixing and matching disparate stylistic shapes and textures. Recorded on analog equipment through vintage microphones and a 1960s Berlant 1/4 inch tape machine, Signs & Signifiers marks the arrival of an authentic, gutsy American artist.
Featuring JD McPherson (lead and backing vocals, guitar), Jimmy Sutton (bass), and Alex Hall (drums, piano, organ), the album also hosts an array of guest musicians, including Scott Ligon on piano (NRBQ's Terry Adams Rock & Roll Quartet); Jonathan Doyle (Nick Curran & the Lowlifes, White Ghost Shivers); Chicago's Josh Bell (The Del Moroccos) on tenor and baritone saxophones; Susan Voelz (Alejandro Escovedo, Poi Dog Pondering) on violin; Allison Chesley (Helen Money) on cello; and Joel Paterson (The Modern Sounds) lends choice guitar work to the Joey Simone classic Your Love (All That I'm Missing).1. Marquee Moon is the debut studio album by American rock band Television. It was released on February 8, 1977, through Elektra Records.
While often considered a seminal work to emerge from the New York punk scene of the mid-to-late 1970s, the album differed from conventional punk in its textured, guitar-based instrumental interplay and extended improvisation. As a result, it is also often cited as important to the development of post-punk in the late 1970s and 1980s.
Though it was critically acclaimed at the time of its release, the album failed to garner commercial success. Marquee Moon has since been cited by numerous publications as one of the greatest albums of rock music.1. See No Evil

Ellington Soars To Unmatched Artistic Heights Alongside Impressive Jazz Stars Including Dizzy Gillespie, Johnny Hodges And Jimmy Rushing!
The tremendously detailed audio effect achieved by Columbia's engineers is brought back to life on this 200-gram LP from Analogue Productions. You want Duke and his men at their best, this is it!
Duke Ellington called his music American Music rather than jazz, and liked to describe those who impressed him as beyond category. He remains one of the most influential figures in jazz, if not in all American music and is widely considered as one of the 20th century's best known African American personalites. He received 13 Grammy Awards and was honored with the French Legion of Honor in 1973. Posthumous recognition of his work include a special award citation from the Pulitzer Prize Board.
Dizzy's spectacular trumpet blooms here amidst the Ellingtonian aggregate. The sometimes tender, sometimes shouting blues style of Jimmy Rushing provides nice contrast in one of the most varied and satisfying Ellington recordings ever. Originally released on Columbia Records in 1959, Jazz Party In Stereo contains a formidable gallery of jazz stars including Dizzy Gillespie, Jimmy Rushing, Johnny Hodges, Clark Terry, Paul Gonsalves, and more!
So what have we done to perfect this brilliant reissue? Mastering by Bernie Grundman from the original analog tape, for starters. Naturally we turned to our own Quality Record Pressings for the finest 200-gram, dead-silent background pressing. Top it off with a Stoughton Printing gatefold tip-on jacket with beautiful full-size inner pictures and you've got an audiophile's dream. A can't miss for your collection!
This most unusual Duke Ellington record includes two selections featuring nine symphonic percussionists on timpani, vibes, marimbas, and xylophones. Dizzy Gillespie makes a historic appearance with Ellington's orchestra on 'U.M.M.G.' (a meeting that should have been repeated often but sadly never was), Jimmy Rushing (Count Basie's former vocalist) sings 'Hello Little Girl,' and both Johnny Hodges ('All of Me') and Paul Gonsalves ('Ready Go!') have chances to blow. - AllMusic

Sunset Boulevard is Franz Waxman's 1950 Academy Award-winning masterpiece. During his career, Waxman received 12 Oscar nominations, winning in consecutive years for Sunset Boulevard and A Place in the Sun.
Sunset Boulevard, the 1950 Billy Wilder film, was scored by Franz Waxman. His theme for Norma Desmond was based on tango music, inspired by her having danced the tango with Rudolph Valentino. This style was contrasted with Joe Gillis's bebop theme. Waxman also used distorted arrangements of popular film-music styles from the 1920s and 1930s to suggest Norma Desmond's state of mind.
The American Film Institute ranked Waxman's score for Sunset Boulevard #16 on their list of the greatest film scores.

A series of original orchestral film scores by various greats from the Golden Age of orchestral soundtracks - Bernstein, Herrmann, Tiomkin, Waxman, etc. These may well be the best sounding recordings of orchestral music ever made. Stupendous bass, soundstage, dynamics, low level detail and imaging.
