    Reads Kaddish - A 20th Century American Ecstatic Narrative Poem

    Along with Howl, Kaddish stands as one of Allen Ginsberg's most illustrious creations. Always a follower of popular trends in music, Ginsberg had spent parts of 1958 digging into Ray Charles' "I Got A Woman" - occasionally doing so while on morphine and methamphetamine. One evening, in this drug-induced state while cranking some Ray, Ginsberg began discussing his mother Naomi with his pal Zev Putterman. Putterman in turn, began reciting the traditional Hebrew "Kaddish" prayer for mourning the dead. Soon after, fueled by Dexedrine, LSD, and caffeine, Allen penned the majority of Kaddish. In early 1959, Kaddish received its debut performance at a poetry reading at Columbia University - in which Allen shared the bill with his lover Peter Orlovsky and fellow beat poet Gregory Corso. Over time, the manuscript was tweaked and adjusted until publication in April 1961 by City Lights. Then, in November 1964, with Orlovsky and Corso in tow, the trio performed several gigs at Harvard and Brandeis Universities, and it was at Brandeis where this recording was made. Released in 1966, Kaddish turned out to be the only record in Atlantic's spoken-word Verbum series; but if label head Jerry Wexler changed his mind about the imprint, he remained a big fan of the work, later telling Los Angeles historian Harvey Kubernik that Kaddish had stirred "the Yiddish currents in my own blood" and inspired "joy and anguish the exaltation that great poetry will bring on." Indeed, Kaddish is an intensely personal and moving work, capturing the complex relationship between Ginsberg, his mother, and his faith, and concluding with a heartrending description of her death. Real Gone Music is very proud to present the first-ever vinyl reissue of this landmark performance, in its original gatefold packaging with an added inner sleeve featuring new liner notes by Pat Thomas and memorabilia provided by the Allen Ginsberg estate over an hour of one of the towering figures in American poetry reading one of his greatest works.

Once again proving himself a master of minimalist composition, Youngs also takes leaps forward as a lyricist on Under Stellar Stream, reminiscent of the list incantations of Allen Ginsberg. With this comes a change in Youngs' voice, now less pleading, deeper and more assured. In these atonal, spatial arrangements, each phrase is granted the room to work into the cerebral cortex.

    On the surface of things, Combat Rock appears to be a retreat from the sprawling stylistic explorations of London Calling and Sandinista! The pounding arena rock of Should I Stay or Should I Go makes the Clash sound like an arena rock band, and much of the album boasts a muscular, heavy sound courtesy of producer Glyn Johns. But things aren't quite that simple. Combat Rock contains heavy flirtations with rap, funk, and reggae, and it even has a cameo by poet Allen Ginsberg -- if this album is, as it has often been claimed, the Clash's sellout effort, it's a very strange way to sell out. Even with the infectious, dance-inflected new wave pop of Rock the Casbah leading the way, there aren't many overt attempts at crossover success, mainly because the group is tearing in two separate directions. Mick Jones wants the Clash to inherit the Who's righteous arena rock stance, and Joe Strummer wants to forge ahead into black music. The result is an album that is nearly as inconsistent as Sandinista!, even though its finest moments -- Should I Stay or Should I Go, Rock the Casbah, Straight to Hell -- illustrate why the Clash were able to reach a larger audience than ever before with the record.

    Master Mix' embodies the genre-defying, experimental spirit that defined Russell's work. Living in the East Village from the '70s until his untimely death in 1992 at age 40 from AIDS-related causes, Russell moved effortlessly between the city's various music scenes, recording disco beats alongside Nicky Siano one night, and the next, crafting slow, haunting tracks in his apartment with his cello and idiosyncratic warbling voice. The New Yorker called his work "stranded between lands real and imagined: the street and the cornfield; the soft bohemian New York and the hard Studio 54 New York; the cheery bold strokes of pop and the liberating possibilities of abstract art." Through his collaborations, he earned the admiration of artists like Allen Ginsberg, David Byrne and Philip Glass, who said of Russell's music: "It does not submit to formula, but subverts the formula."     From the moment you hear the bristling boom-bap chorus on album-opener
    Totally Mutual Feeling, it's apparent that Lushlife's third full-length finds the
    Philadelphia rapper-producer at his most introspective. Themes of isolation and
    mortality permeate Ritualize, a cinematic hour-long odyssey co-produced by
    enigmatic production trio, CSLSX (pronounced Casual Sex) and featuring
    contributions from Ariel Pink, Killer Mike, Freeway, Marissa Nadler, RJD2, and
    more. With CSLSX at the boards, an entire universe opens up for Lush, where
    the pulsating Juno synths of '80s LA night music sit side-by-side with
    gorgeously propulsive indie-leaning jams, and low-fi soul burners too. The
    resulting LP is a post-blog-era joint that seems to exhale the whole of the 20th
    century in a single, fascinating breath.


    After toiling over two self-produced LPs in the last half-decade, I felt
    compelled to bring on an outside production team for Ritualize, Lushlife
    (born Raj Haldar) explains. Not only did I want to broaden the musical
    palette, but I felt like the group production effort would give me a depth of
    focus on lyrical content and emotion that I hadn't previously been afforded.
    After a chance encounter with CSLSX, who had been quietly self-releasing
    low-fi dance gems to remarkable organic blog buzz, the newly-formed team
    set out on a three-year journey that would eventually yield their new joint
    album. By the time work began on Ritualize, Lush had already been riding a
    small wave of critical acclaim for his 2012 full-length, Plateau Vision, an album
    that made several year-end lists and was described by the Sunday New York
    Times as a melding of captivating rhymes with audacious, gorgeous production.
    Still, with Ritualize, Lushlife and CSLSX seem to have gone one deeper.


    From album cut, The Waking World, which finds Lushlife spitting thorough
    sixteens from the vantage of Mark David Chapman lying in wait for John
    Lennon, to Incantation, a song that's as much inspired by Allen Ginsberg's
    Howl as the general, street-level anxieties of urban life, Ritualize is nothing short
    of a step forward. For proof, look no further than Toynbee Suite, a 10-minute,
    4-movement rap epic that explores the strange Toynbee Tile meta-art
    conspiracy that has captivated Philadelphians for decades. As the centerpiece
    of the album, Toynbee Suite was the subject of a 2013 documentary, and
    itself represents the combined work of 20+ musicians, including RJD2, Nightlands,
    Yikes the Zero, and a full chamber orchestra. On the other hand, the
    CSLSX-produced, Hong Kong (Lady of Love), a collaboration with weird
    music godhead, Ariel Pink, is a sparse yet powerful four-on-the-floor ode to LA,
    inspired by the film soundtrack work of Giorgio Moroder, Vangelis, and others.

    Bigger and Blackerer was taped during two shows, back-to-back on the same evening in Boston, MA. Only by watching the DVD will you learn of Daivid Cross unique relationship with the deaf community, share his canny insights into the editorial machinations behind the Bible, and marvel at how well a bald, middle aged white guy can fill out a pair of jeans. Yet one must listen to the LP in order to hear about gastro-intestinal misadventures with his dog Ollie Red Sox, or sing along with The Sultans Revenge, the swinging, Vegas-style opening number composed by Cross and his good friend Mark Rivers (author of the theme to Mr. Show).


    Bigger and Blackerer is David Cross third album, preceded by Its Not Funny (2004) and Shut Up You Fucking Baby! (2002). The latter was actually nominated for a Grammy Award. Cross was also the first comedian signed to Sub Pop Records, paving the way for Eugene Mirman, Flight of the Conchords, and dozens of other hopeful comics.


    During his illustrious career, David Cross has played recurring roles on the TV programs Arrested Development and The Colbert Report, and won an Emmy Award for his contributions to The Ben Stiller Show. He has also starred in such films as Waiting for Guffman, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, the Bob Dylan fantasy Im Not There (in which he portrayed Allen Ginsberg), and Kung Fu Panda. He is currently working on the UK show The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret (broadcast on IFC in the USA).

    Following last month's announcement that Neneh Cherry will release her first solo album in 16 years - a collaboration with RocketNumberNine, produced by Four Tet, and featuring a guest appearance by Robyn - Neneh is now ready to share further details of this forthcoming record with the world. The 10-track album, recorded and mixed over a 5-day period, will be titled Blank Project, and it will be out February 25th, 2014 on Smalltown Supersound. It follows 2012's The Cherry Thing, a collaborative record with free jazz, noise collective The Thing, which featured new versions of songs by The Stooges, MF Doom, Ornette Coleman, amongst others.


    While her energy and demeanor may not have changed since the days of Rip Rig + Panic, musically, Blank Project is a departure from anything Neneh has previously done, initially written as a means of working through personal tragedy. What stands out upon first listen is the album's sparseness: loose drums and a few synthesizers are the only accompaniment to Neneh's wildly poetic, sometimes-spoken, sometimes-screeching, soul-flooded and raw vocals. The space created by this minimal aesthetic leaves room for occasional pistes and flurries of rapid, yet throbbing and thunderous instrumentation. Featuring combined elements of beat poetry, avant-electronica and beautiful vocal melodies, it's a record that uses simple ideas to create something entirely original. And despite the personal struggles, Neneh was working through in writing this new material, the songs are far from introverted.


    As many are aware, the stories from Neneh's early years are astonishing. She spent her childhood living 50/50 between a loft in New York and in the South of Sweden with her mother and stepfather, the legendary jazz musician Don Cherry. She's been lifted onto Miles Davis' lap, Allen Ginsberg regularly passed through their home in an evening and as she got older, she could pop in on Arthur Russell, Talking Heads and The Modern Lovers who all lived in the same loft complex in Long Island City New York. At 14, she started taking trips to Harlem with Ari Up of the Slits at a time when few would venture so far uptown. Soon after, she left home and moved to London, and spent the next 20 years inside the crucial developments in British subculture. As post-punk became the site of 80s Britain's artistic and political resistance, she helped form the anarchic multi-ethnic, multi-genre Rip, Rig + Panic, and she was one of the first to bring hip-hop culture to a British audience with "Buffalo Stance" and Raw Like Sushi. Although at points her career had brushes with the mainstream, Neneh remained staunchly counter-culture.


    Through post-punk's adherence to mixed-race line-ups and anti-government stance, to UK rap's refusal of the conventions of pop, trip-hop's connection with the politicized elements of rave culture and, through 1996's Man, where Neneh introduced elements of Senegalese language to mainstream audiences for the first time via the mammoth "7 Seconds" single featuring Senegalese singer Youssou N'Dour, and now, with Blank Project, Neneh continues to arrive at moments in musical history when there is an opportunity to subvert ideas of popular culture. She is subverting once again, only this time, although this record is musically bold, Neneh sees the stasis she's challenging isn't musical or societal, but her own.

    Erik Hall worked patiently and solitarily for four years to craft Driver, his sophomore album as In Tall
    Buildings. Produced between his home studio in the Pilsen neighborhood of Chicago and a 60's
    farmhouse in Leelanau County, Michigan, the album comes twenty years after Hall originally fell in
    love with home recording at age 13 - the year he got his hands on his first multitrack recorder.
    Raised in downtown Chicago, Hall played drums and guitar in high school rock bands, and then went
    on to study percussion and audio engineering at the University of Michigan. While in college he joined
    the avant afro-funk band NOMO and met His Name is Alive's Warn Defever, who produced many of the
    band's albums. Under Defever's tutelage, Hall honed many of the recording and production techniques
    he would later apply to his solo recordings. As he explains, I was the guy in the band badgering him
    with questions throughout the sessions, trying to learn everything I could and then trying it out
    myself at home. As a multi-instrumentalist and producer Hall eventually went on to record and tour
    with several groups, including old friends His Name is Alive and, more recently, dream-pop duo Wild
    Belle, performing the rhythm section tracks and lending an engineering hand to their Columbia
    Records debut.


    In 2010 Hall's home recording efforts yielded the first In Tall Buildings album, which The Huffington
    Post called gorgeous indie-pop, and the Chicago Tribune found hypnotic. In an interview with the
    Chicago Tribune, he summed up much of his philosophy about composition with a pair of conflicting
    quotes he attributes to Allen Ginsberg and Kurt Vonnegut, respectively: First thought, best thought
    and Edit yourself, mercilessly. Loosely guided by these principles, Hall set out once again to
    assemble a new batch of songs, when he wasn't recording and touring with other bands.


    In stark contrast to the dense polyrhythms echoed by NOMO's albums, Driver uses a relatively simple
    palette to create spacious pop songs, leaving plenty of room for Hall's often Peter Gabriel-esque
    vocals to shine. The music, though culled from every guitar, keyboard, and drum he managed to fit
    into his home studio, is powerful in it's restrained simplicity, and it's a compelling foil to the haunting
    gravity of his vocal performance. Never rushed, his melodies deliver elliptical lyrics that manage to
    feel intimate, while retaining a sense of mystery. Ultimately, the album's melancholic vibe is relatable,
    rather than moping or histrionic, and in the end these songs are incredibly comforting and inviting.

Metamorphosis was written in 1988 and takes its name from a play based on Kafka's short story. Its second track, Metamorphosis Two, formed the basis of one of the main musical themes in the film The Hours. It is also the song that the American rock band Pearl Jam uses as their introduction music to concerts.


    Mad Rush was written for the occasion of the Dalai Lama's first visit in New York City. Wichita Vortex Sutra is the result of a chance meeting between two long-time friends, Glass and poet Allen Ginsberg, in a bookstore in the East Village. 'We decided on the spot to do something together, reached for one of Allen's books, and chose the poem Wichita Vortex Sutra'.
