    Sound & Color (180 Gram)

    2xLP On 180 Gram Vinyl

Alabama Shakes announced that they will be releasing the highly anticipated follow-up to their 2012 Grammy-nominated debut. The new album is titled Sound & Color.

"We took our time to write this record, and I'm really glad we did," says Brittany Howard, lead singer and guitarist of Alabama Shakes, about the band's new album Sound & Color. "We were able to sit down and think about what's exciting to us, explore all the things we wanted to on our first album. This record is full of genre-bending songs-it's even harder now when people ask, 'What kind of band are you?' I have no clue."

The album's twelve songs reveal a band honed by years on the road, and drawing from a wide range of influences. The bluesy groove of "Shoegaze" or the garage-rock freak-out on "The Greatest" give way to the psychedelic space jam "Gemini." The gently swaying, chiming title song opens the album with what Howard calls "more of a visual thing, I think of this whole scene going on," then explodes into the urgent, tightly-coiled funk of "Don't Wanna Fight." Long instrumental intros and passages create hazy atmosphere, and then the intensity of Howard's vocals snaps everything back into riveting focus.

    Boys And Girls

Alabama Shakes' debut release Boys & Girls marks the arrival of a major new rock 'n' roll band. Due out on ATO Records, the album was recorded at The Bomb Shelter in Nashville, TN and was produced and mixed by the band. Boys & Girls is a vibrant fusion of swampy, dirty Southern rock, blues and soul delivered with punk rock fervor. From the heartrending title song to such stompers as Rise to the Sun, the album demonstrates the sense of groove and space the band learned from their idols, along with a blistering force and emotion that simply can't be learned.

For born-and-bred Nashvillian Chris Denney, it all began at age 9---Stealing pills from his Grandma's medicine cabinet, smoking 2 packs a day and eventually graduating to marijuana by the age of 13. It wasn't until about 5 years ago that Denney started channeling his life experiences into vivid tales of what he knows best - Sex, Drugs and Rock and Roll. Denney and The Jets' debut LP, Mexican Coke was recorded and mixed in just 5 days in East Nashville on to 2" tape by Andrija Tokic (Alabama Shakes "Boys and Girls") and Chris Denney with help from friends Clear Plastic Masks (Serpents and Snakes/Dine Alone) who backed Denney in the studio and co-produced.

    Cast The Same Old Shadow

A native of Muscle Shoals, Alabama - and part of the growing music scene there (Alabama Shakes, Secret Sisters, Civil Wars etc) Twenty-three year old Dylan was practically raised in the legendary Fame Studios where his dad was a regular player, and where people like Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Etta James and countless others recorded.

Fame's head, Rick Hall, signed Dylan to its publishing arm. Part of the deal was that Dylan got access to the studio, where he recorded both his debut album Paupers Field (2010) and the bulk of the forthcoming follow-up Cast The Same Old Shadow.

    Small Town Heroes

In 2014, Hurray for the Riff Raff release 'Small Town Heroes,' its debut for ATO Records. The album finds frontwoman Alynda Lee Segarra -
who settled in New Orleans after leaving her native Bronx at age 17.

Produced by Segarra and engineered by Andrija Tokic (Alabama Shakes), 'Small Town Heroes' features twelve new, original songs all written or cowritten
by Segarra, with support from a vivid cast of Crescent City musicians.

NPR has said that Hurray for the Riff Raff sweeps across eras and genres with grace and grit," never more so than on 'Small Town Heroes.' On the
hedonist country lament "I Know It's Wrong (But That's Alright)" Segarra sings to a forbidden love "I'll feed you watermelon off the vine," while on "The
Body Electric she exposes the misogyny of the traditional murder ballad, and warns Delia's gone, but I'm settling the score.

Ultimately though, many of the songs embody that most magical and fated of American cities, New Orleans. Segarra bears witness to a wave of violence
that struck the St. Roch neighborhood in St. Roch Blues; yearns for a night at BJ's Bar in the Bywater in Crash on the Highway; and sings of her own
Lower Ninth Ward home in End of the Line.

'Small Town Heroes' follows Hurray for the Riff Raff's self-released 2012 album 'Look Out Mama,' which led to a performance at the Newport Folk
Festival, and praise from Mojo, which compared Segarra to "a soulful, young Loretta Lynn," and The New York Times which hailed the group as part of
the loosely cohered movement of younger musicians embracing and reframing American roots music, giving it a polish of currency but otherwise leaving
    its bones intact.

    The Deslondes

Hailed by NPR as "deft assemblers of a sound that traverses decades and styles with humble grace," New Orleans band The Deslondes mine from the rich history of American music to craft their compelling and wholly unique eponymous debut album, released on New West Records.

Co-produced by the band and in-demand producer Andrija Tokic (Benjamin Booker, Alabama Shakes, Hurray for the Riff Raff) at his Nashville studio The Bomb Shelter, the 12 tracks are influenced by classic soul, rock 'n' roll, R&B, folk, roots country, swamp-boogie, honky-tonk and pre-war music and introduce a collective of gifted singer-songwriters with a deep love for the past and a palpable passion for the present. "They manage to resurrect a lost sound, exclaimed Rolling Stone in their "20 Reasons To Love This Year" preview, adding, "Stax and Sun records are distinct touch points, as are upright-bass-driven melodies - while giving it a modern, vibrant swing, building on the foundations of old-time traditions without sounding like they're stepping out of a time machine."

Comprised of five distinct songwriting voices, The Deslondes endeavor to carry on the traveling troubadour tradition of their heroes Woody Guthrie, Hank Williams and Townes Van Zandt. The Deslondes have also toured the country extensively and have supported the Alabama Shakes, Old Crow Medicine Show, Hurray for the Riff Raff, The Lumineers, John Fullbright, Michael Kiwanuka, Spirit Family Reunion and performed at last summer's Newport Folk Festival.

    We're All Gonna Die

Dawes' highly anticipated new album We're All Gonna Die will be released via the band's own HUB Records.

Of the album, Taylor Goldsmith (guitar, vocals) explains, "Pretty much every song on this record explores a difficult situation and tries to find a way to find the good in it, or at least remind yourself that it's not always that big of a deal. After all, as scary as it is, we are all gonna die."

The album was produced by Grammy nominated producer Blake Mills (Alabama Shakes) and includes backing vocals from Brittany Howard of Alabama Shakes, Jim James of My Morning Jacket, Holly Laessig and Jess Wolfe of Lucius, Mandy Moore and Will Oldham.

Dawes has toured extensively playing headline shows worldwide and major festival appearances including Bonnaroo, Austin City Limits, Lollapalooza and Newport Folk Festival. Recently, they have toured with My Morning Jacket, Bob Dylan, Mumford and Sons, Conor Oberst, and Jackson Browne.

In the fall of 2014, Goldsmith contributed to Lost On The River: The New Basement Tapes, an album project which found collaborators Elvis Costello, Rhiannon Giddens (Carolina Chocolate Drops), Taylor Goldsmith (Dawes), Jim James (My Morning Jacket), Marcus Mumford (Mumford & Sons) and producer T Bone Burnett writing and creating music for a treasure trove of recently discovered lyrics handwritten by Bob Dylan in 1967 during the period that generated the recording of the legendary Basement Tapes.

Fellow collaborator Jim James proclaims about We're All Gonna Die, "The record sounds so fresh-yet fills me with a strange nostalgia for things that haven't happened yet...I hear it at the beach and blasting out of car windows on future summer nights...easily having become a natural part of people's lives."

Witness is the highly anticipated follow-up to Benjamin Booker's critically acclaimed self-titled debut album. The album's ten new, original tracks were all written by Booker, produced by Sam Cohen (Kevin Morby) and mixed by Shawn Everett (Alabama Shakes), and the title track features a guest vocal from Mavis Staples.

'I wanted to make a record about the things in my life I never wanted to talk about. It's a record about self-exploration, about learning to love yourself and opening yourself up to love others, about choosing the kind of person you want to be, about confronting death and appreciating life. Really it's about trying to take control from the perspective of someone who has come very close on several occasions to losing ALL control.'

From The Hills Below The City

Houndmouth is comprised of four musicians from New Albany, IN, across the
river from Louisville - hence 'From the Hills Below the City.' Matt Myers (guitar/
vocals), Katie Toupin (keyboard/vocals), Zak Appleby (bass/vocals) and Shane
Cody (drums/vocals) spent the past year building a passionate following in their
hometown and touring with the Alabama Shakes, the Lumineers, Grace Potter,
and the Drive-By Truckers. "Houndmouth is a great young band," testifies Patterson Hood of the Truckers. "They 'brought it' each and every night. They were
extremely popular with our fanbase and our band. I look forward to hearing what
    they do next."

The 12 original songs on 'From The Hills Below the City' are packed with tales
of down-on-their-luck drug runners, casinos, riverboats, recession-era scraping,
and more. All members of Houndmouth sing, "leading with individual character
and harmonizing in saloon-choir empathy," writes Rolling Stone's David Fricke,
and their songs have a loose-limbed swing, anchored by a sturdy rhythm and a
    cagey melodic sensibility.

From collaborating with the likes of Tweedy and David Byrne, to becoming such a part of the Newport Folk Festival family that they were asked to back up Roger Waters during this year's incredible headlining performance, the last two years have been the best in the Lucius' career. Now, the Brooklyn band is prepping to keep the good times going with the release of their latest LP, Good Grief.

Arriving via Mom + Pop Music, Good Grief was produced by Shawn Everett (Alabama Shakes, Weezer) and Bob Ezrin, along with the band themselves. The 11 tracks see the singer-songwriter duo of Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig exploring the emotions of "loneliness, sadness and exhaustion alongside excitement, fulfillment and some of the most joyful moments in our lives" that they experienced while touring behind their last record. "Whenever one of us had an idea or a feeling," Wolfe said in a press release, "the other was already a witness to it and could help navigate through it - for the two of us, this usually came in song form."

    A Deeper Understanding (Pre-Order)

The War On Drugs has announced their fourth full-length album, A Deeper Understanding, set for release via Atlantic Records. A Deeper Understanding is the band's first album since 2014's universally acclaimed Lost In The Dream, and their debut album with Atlantic.

For much of the three and a half year period since the release of Lost In The Dream, The War On Drugs' frontman, Adam Granduciel, led the charge for his Philadelphia-based sextet as he holed up in studios in New York and Los Angeles to write, record, edit, and tinker-but, above all, to busy himself in work. Teaming up with engineer Shawn Everett (Alabama Shakes, Weezer), Granduciel challenged the notion of what it means to create a fully realized piece of music in today's modern landscape. Calling on his bandmates - bassist Dave Hartley, keyboarding Robbie Bennett, drummer Charlie Hall and multi-instrumentalists Anthony LaMarca and Jon Natchez -- continuously throughout the process, the result is a band record in the noblest sense, featuring collaboration, coordination, and confidence at every turn. Through those years of relocation, the revisiting and reexamining of endless hours of recordings, unbridled exploration, and exuberance, Granduciel's gritty love of his craft succeeded in pushing the band to great heights.

    Dad Country

Nashville songwriter Jonny Fritz's work ethic and boldness have paid off in spades. It's been a big year for Jonny with opening stints for Alabama Shakes, Deer Tick, Dawes, Shooter Jennings and kudos from CMT and Rolling Stone, among many others. He signed his deal this week (he actually signed the deal with gravy at Nashville landmark Arnold's Country Kitchen), and his third full-length album, Dad Country, is set for release on April 16, 2013.

Produced by Jonny and Dawes' Taylor Goldsmith, recorded at Jackson Browne's Los Angeles studio and finished up in Music City, USA; this breakthrough album balances Jonny's trademark earthy humor and unfiltered worldview with some of his darkest material to date. Co-producer Goldsmith says, "Funny as they can be at moments, his songs access realities and experiences that we're all familiar with but sometimes fail to consider the depths of."
While immersing himself in the music world, Jonny began running marathons from Philadelphia to Barcelona and pounding out his signature leather works - the dog collars and guitar straps - seen all over Nashville and half the musical universe. He found himself in NYC for year trying to save a relationship, and its slow, painful unraveling (and demise) inspired Dad Country's bleakest, heartrending tracks, including "All We Do Is Complain" and "Have You Ever Wanted to Die."

These days, life has never been better for Jonny Fritz. He's back in Nashville again and putting down roots- and has even gone and bought himself a house. "It just keeps getting better. Now, the band is getting paid, I'm getting paid, everybody's happy, and we're packing 'em in when we play."
"This is the dream life. I couldn't really ask for anything else."

    Heigh Ho

Renowned guitarist, songwriter, and producer Blake Mills will release his highly anticipated second album, Heigh Ho, on via Verve
    Records / Record Collection.

"The goals for Heigh Ho were songs, sonics, and capturing performance," Mills said. "I love my first album and how it sounds, but since making Break
Mirrors I feel like I've heard enough music that seems to be overtly 'lo-fi' or reverb-saturated; so I was interested in finding a combination of sounds that I
hadn't heard used together before. I was very fortunate to be able to call on this group of people to help me map some new terrain."

Recorded in Los Angeles at the legendary Ocean Way studios in a room built for Frank Sinatra & used by everyone from Bob Dylan to Ray Charles, Mills
created an album that references a range of genres without really belonging to any.

To that end, Mills asked several of his musical heroes - including Jim Keltner, Don Was, Jon Brion, Benmont Tench, Mike Elizondo, and Fiona Apple (who
duets on the slow-burning "Seven" and timeless sounding "Don't Tell Our Friends About Me") - to collaborate on what would become Heigh Ho. "Blake
arranged the music the way that CÉzanne would've filled a canvas," Don Was notes of his experience

Since quietly making his debut album, Break Mirrors, which critics hailed as one of the best albums of 2010, Mills has been consistently busy. He's
producing the highly anticipated sophomore album for The Alabama Shakes, and has worked as a producer with a wide variety of artists, including ZZ
Top's Billy Gibbons, Sara Watkins, Conor Oberst, Sky Ferreira, and Fiona Apple, with whom he toured extensively in 2013 and 2014. As a session player
and sideman he has worked with Beck, Cass McCombs, Jackson Browne, Lucinda Williams, Moses Sumney and Neil Diamond, among others. Rick
Rubin and T Bone Burnett frequently call upon his services as a guitarist, and equally enamored is Eric Clapton who recently told Rolling Stone magazine
"Blake Mills is the last guitarist I heard that I thought was phenomenal.

    Memories Are Now

Jesca Hoop's new album Memories Are Now on Sub Pop Records wastes no time in making clear its confidence, confrontation, and craftsmanship. The stark and reverberant title track opens the album with "a fighting spirit," says Hoop, serving as an anthem to push through any obstacle and put forth your very best work. And she has unequivocally done that here, with an album of stunningly original songs--minimalist yet brimming with energy, emerging from a wealth of life experience, great emotional depth, and years of honing the craft of singing.

As riveting as it is reflective, the album, produced by Blake Mills (Fiona Apple, Alabama Shakes), is a fresh debut of sorts for Hoop, as the first of her solo records made outside of Tony Berg's Zeitgeist Studios where she and Mills were mentored. Says Hoop, "Blake is so utterly musical and emotionally intelligent in his expression. I wanted to see what we could do, just he and I out from under Tony's wing." Mills pushed her to strip away layers, keeping it as close to the live experience as possible, using whole live takes and working very quickly. "It's still covered in embryonic fluid, for lack of a better way to put it," says Hoop.

However fast the work, Memories Are Now covers a great deal of ground, showcasing every edge and curve of Hoop's captivating voice, with sounds and themes ranging from the mythic to the deeply intimate. She sings of the religion that weighs heavily on her past and the world, of the imagination of myth, of the cruel nature of life and love.

The defiance that permeates Memories Are Now is both a product and necessity of a career that has been independently driven and self-funded from the beginning. "All of my successes have been won on the grassroots level, with handshakes and hugs from great people who believe in me," says Hoop, more than a decade into her career and with new paths to forge. As she sings in the title track, "I've lived enough life, I've earned my stripes. That's my knife in the ground, this is mine." -Evie Nagy

    Beulah

Beulah. It's a small, complicated word with a tangle of meanings.

It's the title of John Paul White's new album, his first in nearly a decade, a remarkably and assuredly diverse collection spanning plaintive folk balladry, swampy southern rock, lonesome campfire songs, and dark acoustic pop. Gothic and ambitious, with a rustic, lived-in sound, it's a meditation on love curdling into its opposite, on recrimination defining relationships, on hope finally filtering through doubt.

Beulah is also a White family nickname. "It's a term of endearment around our house," White explains, "like you would call someone 'Honey.' My dad used to call my little sister Beulah, and I call my daughter Beulah. It's something I've always been around."

Beulah is also something much loftier. For the poet and painter William Blake, Beulah was a place deep in the collective spiritual unconscious. "I won't pretend to be the smartest guy in the world," says White, "but I dig a lot of what he's written. Beulah was a place you could go in your dreams. You could go there in meditation, to relax and heal and center B photo credit: Allister Ann 119 west 57th street, penthouse north, new york, ny 10019 t 212.741.1000 www.sacksco.com SACKS A CO. N D yourself. It wasn't a place you could stay, but you came back to the world in a better state."

And perhaps the music on this album originated in that "pleasant lovely Shadow where no dispute can come." According to White, the songs came to him unbidden-and not entirely welcome. "When these songs started popping into my head, I had been home for a while and I was perfectly happy. I wasn't looking for songs. I didn't know whether any would pop back in my head again, and I was honestly okay with that. I'm a very happy father and husband, and I love where I live. I love working with artists for a label that I think is doing good work."

Far from the grind and glamour of Nashville-where he worked for years as a working songwriter before stepping into the spotlight himself-White settled in his hometown of Muscle Shoals, Alabama, a wellspring of gritty Southern rock and soul since the 1960s. Together with Alabama Shakes keyboard player Ben Tanner and Shoals native Will Trapp, he founded and runs Single Lock Records, a local indie label that has released records by some of the Yellowhammer State's finest, including Dylan LeBlanc, St. Paul & the Broken Bones, and legendary songwriter and keyboard player Donnie Fritts. The label is based in a small ranch house a stone's throw from White's own home, which would come in handy when those songs started invading his head.

"Honestly, I tried to avoid them, but then I realized the only way I was going to get rid of them was if I wrote them down. I got my phone out and I'd sing these little bits of melody, then put it away and move on. But eventually I got to a place where it was a roar in my head, and that pissed me off." Due to his experiences as a gun-for-hire in Nashville, White was reluctant to romanticize the creative process, to turn it into a spiritual pursuit. "Then one day I told my wife I think I'm going to go write a song. She was as surprised as I was. I went and wrote probably eight songs in three days. It was like turning on a faucet."

Most artists would kill for such a downpour, but White was wary of the consequences. He knew that writing songs would lead to recording them, which would result in releasing them, and that means touring and leaving home for weeks at a time. "As soon as I write a song, I start thinking what other people might think of it. I've talked to friends about this: What is it about us that makes us do that? Why can't I just sit on my back porch and sing these songs out into the ether? I don't have an answer for it yet, but I think it's just part of who I am. I need that reaction. I need to feel like I'm moving someone in a good way or in a bad way. I need to feel like there's a connection."

White threw himself into the project, no longer the reluctant songwriter but a craftsman determined to make the best album possible-to do these songs justice. He cut several songs at the renowned FAME Studios in his hometown, where Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, the Allmans, the Osmonds, Bobbie Gentry, Arthur Conley, and Clarence Carter recorded some of their most popular hits.

One product of those sessions is "What's So," which introduces itself by way of a fire-andbrimstone riff, as heavy as a guilty conscience-the kind of riff you wouldn't be surprised to hear on a Sabbath album. But White's vocals are gritty and soulful, a product of the Shoals, almost preacherly as he sings about earthly and eternal damnation: "Sell your damn soul or get 119 west 57th street, penthouse north, new york, ny 10019 t 212.741.1000 www.sacksco.com SACKS A CO. N D right with the man, keep treading water as long as you can," he exhorts the listener. "But before you do, you must understand that you don't get above your raisin'." It's the heaviest moment on the record, perhaps the darkest in White's career.

At the other end of the spectrum is "The Martyr," one of the catchiest tunes White has ever penned. The spryness of the melody imagines Elliott Smith wandering the banks of the Tennessee River, yet the song is shot through with a pervasive melancholy as White wrestles with his own demons. "Keep falling on your sword, sink down a little more," he sings over a dexterous acoustic guitar theme. This is not, however, a song about some unnamed person, but rather a pained self-diagnosis: "These are the wounds that I will not let heal, the ones that I deserve and seem so real." White knows he's playing the martyr, but he leaves the song hauntingly open-ended, as though he isn't sure what to do with this epiphany beyond putting it in a song.

The rest of Beulah was recorded in the Single Lock offices/studio near White's home. "I can be more relaxed about the process. We can all just sit there and talk about records or baseball without feeling like someone's standing over our shoulders. That's a big deal to me, not to feel pressured. And I'm only about twenty yards away from home, so I can walk over and throw a baseball with my kids or make dinner with my wife."

Some of the quieter-but no less intense-songs on Beulah were created in that environment, including the ominously erotic opener "Black Leaf" and the Southern gothic love song "Make You Cry." As he worked, a distinctive and intriguing aesthetic began to grow clearer and clearer, one based in austere arrangements and plaintive moods. These are songs with empty spaces in them, dark corners that could hold ghosts or worse. "There were certain moments when Ben and I would finish up a song, listen back to it, and think how in the world did we get here. But that's just what the songs ask for. These are the sounds in my head. This is the sound of me thinking and living and breathing and doing."

Once White had everything assembled and sequenced, it was time to give the album a title, to wrap everything up for the listener. Beulah stuck-not only because of family history or Blake, but because White realized that making music was his own trip to Beulah. "If you had to sum up what music is for most people in this world, it's that. It's that escape. It's that refuge. You go there and you come back and you use that to help you with your life. You always have that as a place to go."
