    Al Green was the first great soul singer of the '70s and arguably the last great Southern soul singer. With his seductive singles for Hi Records in the early '70s, Green bridged the gap between deep soul and smooth Philadelphia soul.     Al Green Gets Next To You (Pure Pleasure)

    After the shaky start of Green Is Blues, Al Green and producer Willie Mitchell established their classic sound with Green's second album, Gets Next to You. The main difference is in the rhythm section. Abandoning the gritty syncopations of deep Southern soul, the Hi Rhythm Section plays it slow and seductive, working a sultry, steady pulse that Green exploits with his remarkable voice. Alternating between Sam Cooke's croon and Otis Redding's shout, Green develops his own distinctive style, and Gets Next To You only touches the surface of its depth. Although the album is filled with wonderful moments, few are as astonishing as Green and Mitchell's reinterpretation of the Temptations' I Can't Get Next to You, which turns the original inside out.

    A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.



    We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.



    We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.



    To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    Call Me (Speakers Corner)

    What connects celebrity chefs and pop stars is their fine nose for ingredients, especially when hot and spicy ones are mixed with milder elements to create an aromatic result. A combination of 'sweet' and 'funky' is the secret of Al Green's gloriously sentimental and sensual pop songs, which in the sexually free Seventies were often referred to as »songs to make love by«. What swings along gently is, however, Al Green's subtly controlled falsetto, which he can tone right to the threshold of audibility. But watch out! This music belts out some fiery sounds right from the very first number. The sinuous, swinging request in the brilliant hit single Call Me, the relaxed and groovy Stand Up, with its sharp wind interjections which demand one's unerring attention, are typical for Green's style, just as is his almost disturbing capability to gain comfort from loneliness (I'm So Lonesome, I Could Cry). This rhythmically powered music can best be described as light, intensive, dynamic but never flashy (Your Love Is Like The Morning Sun). It finds its earthly culmination in soul (I'm Waiting) and spiritual depth.

This also marks the first instance in which Green plays lead guitar on his records. The Belle Album is one of the last in a string of secular recordings made by Green; he had recently converted to Christianity and had been ordained as a pastor, and thereafter he began creating gospel records exclusively.

    Al Green Explores Your Mind (Pure Pleasure)

    By the time of 1974's Al Green Explores Your Mind, this version of the Memphis sound was the production style for only a handful of artists. Producer Willie Mitchell used a lighter touch for his most famous artist, and it's all but crafted into the Al Green sound. Despite his skills, Green never falls into mannerism here and gives heartfelt and cogent vocals rooted in intelligence and technique. Sha-La-La (Make Me Happy), although lyrically slight, has the artist's charisma and Mitchell's pop chops. Take Me to the River, with perfect backing from Hi Rhythm and a horn and string arrangement, finds Green at his most persuasive. The last track, School Days, has Green longing for a school girlfriend and despite the potentially sappy sentiment, it works like a charm. The greatness of Al Green Explores Your Mind comes from a collective effort, including James Mitchell's dreamlike string arrangements and the always skilled backing vocals of Rhodes, Chalmers & Rhodes. But the biggest draw here is Green's phrasing and intimate vocals, making the record an extremely strong effort.

    The Live Adventures of Mike Bloomfield and Al Kooper is a double album recorded at the Fillmore West venue in San Francisco. The album is the follow-up to the studio album Super Session which included both Bloomfield and Kooper in addition to Stephen Stills, and had achieved commercial and critical success earlier in 1968.


    In regards to the performances, recordings and production, in the sleeve notes Kooper describes the difficulties of finding rehearsal space, Bloomfield's insomnia, and the failure of a vocal microphone during Dear Mr Fantasy. The album is an important, if raw, document of a live blues-rock performance of the period and is notable for not only one of the earliest live recordings by Carlos Santana, but also Bloomfield's debut as a vocalist. Whilst he is not historically noted in this role, in Don't Throw Your Love on Me So Strong, according to Kooper, he displays consummate homage to the traditional guitar-voice trade-offs; a lesson in phrasing and understanding.

    Hi Records producer Willie Mitchell constructed his vaunted house rhythm section around three talented Hodges Brothers during the late-'60s: guitarist Mabon (nicknamed Teenie); bassist Leroy; and organist Charles. With drummer Howard Grimes (and on some of Al Green's sides, MG's trapsman Al Jackson Jr.) rounding out the lineup, this skintight Memphis quartet laid down surging, simmering grooves behind the entire Hi stable during the label's 1970's heyday: Green, Ann Peebles, Otis Clay, Syl Johnson, and Mitchell himself, to name but a few. Mitchell had patiently molded the unit since when the Hodges Brothers were just in their teens.


    As the succinctly named Hi Rhythm, they recorded the 1976 LP, On The Loose, and remained a cohesive unit well into the '90s, even providing luxurious backing on Johnson's wonderful 1994 comeback set for Delmark, Back in the Game. Meanwhile, as the Hodges Brothers, they released a 1994 record called Perfect Gentlemen on the tiny Velvet Recording of America logo that also featured a fourth brother Fred on keys and veteran soul singer Percy Wiggins on several tracks. Fat Possum now has the distinction of reissuing the Hi Rhythm's long out-of-print 1976 offering On The Loose here on vinyl once again!

    Born April 13, 1946 in Forest City, AR, Al Green began singing in his family's gospel group. His distinctive vocal talent and extraordinary ability to master pop, R&B, and gospel genres has enabled him to become an international superstar. Not only is he Hi Records' most awarded singer/songwriter, but in a phenomenal career spanning more than thirty years, he's charted six #1 hits and has been inducted into the prestigious Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame.


    Originally released in 1971, Al Green Get's Next To You was his first major release and it features a killer selection of raw Memphis soul.     Norah has taken a new direction on The Fall, experimenting with different sounds and a new set of collaborators, including Jacquire King, a noted producer and engineer who has worked with Kings of Leon, Tom Waits and Modest Mouse. Richly detailed and vocally lush on 200-gram, super-silent vinyl from Analogue Productions, The Fall, Jones' fourth album, may surprise some of Jones' die-hard fans, Billboard magazine notes. During the 13-song set, Jones ditches the gentle piano playing of her previous work and tears into fresh, beat-savvy arrangements, playing plenty of electric guitar and exploring the piercing quality of Wurlitzer electric piano. Jones' smoky voice and soulful veneer highlight the opening track and first single, Chasing Pirates.


    Jones displays a slinky kind of ambience on Light As a Feather (co-written with Ryan Adams). The social commentary It's Gonna Be offers a garage-rock attitude, and You've Ruined Me has a rich Americana flavor. But Jones is still a little bit country (Tell Yer Mama) and a little bit rock'n'roll (Stuck). Overall, writes reviewer Gary Graff, Jones straddles those lines in an entirely different manner than she ever has before.

    From A Whisper To A Scream (Pure Pleasure)

    One of Esther Phillips finest '70s releases, From A Whisper To A Scream is the first of seven albums the singer recorded for CTI offshoot Kudu. Arranged and conducted by Pee Wee Ellis, the December 1971 session also involved principal players such as bassist Gordon Edwards, drummer Bernard Purdie, percussionist Airto, guitarists Cornell Dupree and Eric Gale, keyboardist Richard Tee, and saxophonists Hank Crawford and David Liebman. Setting the tone for Phillips' Kudu era, Whisper offers a series of spacious, yet fully arranged ballads of burning heartache, along with a handful of relatively funky numbers that do nothing to compromise her talent, dishing out loads of classy grit. It's a definite point of departure from the likes of Esther Phillips Sings and And I Love Him!, her field of contemporaries closer to Al Green and Aretha Franklin than before. She grabs onto Home Is Where The Hatred Is, Gil Scott-Heron's most harrowing rumination on drug dependency -- which, at that point, wasn't even a year old -- as if it were her very own, and it's all the more poignant given its parallels with her own life. (It's meaning was only compounded by her death in 1984.) Though there is absolutely nothing lacking in the album's more energetic moments, it's still the ballads that shine brightest, like the alternately fragile and explosive From A Whisper To A Scream (Allen Toussaint) and a staggering Baby, I'm for Real (Marvin and Anna Gordy, made popular by the Originals) so vulnerable yet commanding that it really should've closed the album.

    About Pure Pleasure



    At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.



    During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.



    A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.



    We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.



    We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.



    To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.

    Solomon Burke recorded Nothing's Impossible with Willie Mitchell in his famous Royal Studio in Memphis in late 2009. This record, which was 35 years in the making, unfortunately turned out to be one of the last projects either of these legends would work on. Willie Mitchell passed away in January 2010, while Solomon Burke exchanged this world for the Great Concert In The Sky on the advent of his European tour in October 2010.


    While Music On Vinyl and V2 had planned to make this album their first collaborative project, they are now even more aware of its historical importance, and will make sure that it receives the care and attention it is due.


    Solomon Burke grew up in the gospel tradition and this remained one of the main influences in his music. Willie Mitchell, who is most famous for his work with Al Green, was fully aware of this. Mitchell wraps Burke's raw emotional delivery in a rich arrangement that keeps Burke's Sunday morning fervor intact while he examines the heart of every song.


    This is a record that was long in the making and yet seems effortless, a validation of the greatness of two legends.

    In the wake of the success of their seminal 1968 Super Session release, blues-steeped guitar hero Mike Bloomfield (Butterfield Blues Band and Electric Flag) and multi-talented keyboardist/singer Al Kooper (Blues Project and Blood, Sweat & Tears) teamed up again for a historic series of joint performances as San Francisco's legendary Fillmore West, which are documented on The Live Adventures of Mike Bloomfield and Al Kooper.


    The resulting live album, culled from three nights' worth of shows and released in 1969, is a powerful testament to the formidable musical chemistry of these two rock legends, whose collaboration began when they played on Bob Dylan's classic Highway 61 Revisited.     Melissa Etheridge has announced the release of her new album MEmphis Rock and Soul, a tribute to Stax Records and the rich history of classic Southern soul, scheduled for release via Stax Records, a division of Concord Music Group. The album is a collection of deep soul covers associated with the original Stax label, including songs recorded by Otis Redding, Rufus Thomas, The Staple Singers, William Bell and more.
