In Spades"Cleromancy" isn't a word one normally finds in rock lyrics. Then again, In Spades - the forthcoming album by The Afghan Whigs, from which the new song "Oriole" hails - is defined only by its own mystical inner logic. The term means to divine, in a supernatural manner, a prediction of destiny from the random casting of lots: the throwing of dice, picking a card from a deck. From its evocative cover art to the troubled spirits haunting its halls, In Spades casts a spell that challenges the listener to unpack its dark metaphors and spectral imagery.
On the one hand, In Spades is as quintessentially Afghan Whigs as anything the group has ever done - fulfilling its original mandate to explore the missing link between howling Midwestern punk like Die Kreuzen and HÜsker DÜ, The Temptations' psychedelic soul symphonies, and the expansive hard-rock tapestries of Led Zeppelin and Lynyrd Skynyrd. At the same time, this new record continues to push beyond anything in the Whigs' previous repertoire - another trademark, along with the explosive group dynamic captured on the recording.
Indeed, the chemistry of the lineup - Dulli, guitarists Dave Rosser and Jon Skibic, drummer Patrick Keeler, multi-instrumentalist Rick Nelson, and Whigs co-founder/bassist John Curley - set the tone for In Spades' creation. When it came to follow up the band's triumphant return to recording - Do To the Beast (2014), which was the band's first ever Top 40 album, - the die was cast. "This is the first time since Black Love [the Whigs' 1996 noir masterpiece] that we've done a full-blown band album," Dulli says.
The joys, sorrows, and upheavals of innocence and experience echo throughout In Spades: it powerfully documents where The Afghan Whigs have been, and where they might go next. For Dulli and Curley, it's a journey that, since their origins as one of the first Sub Pop acts to be signed from outside the label's Pacific Northwest base, has spanned decades. Dulli notes they were barely in their twenties when they first started the band, and yet here they are, fulfilling dreams long held and frequently realized. "Having a break from the Whigs helped me remember what made it so rewarding," Curley says. "Over the course of a lifetime, there are constants, and there's also change. You see who's dropped off the vine - who's going in reverse, and who's still by your side. It's interesting to see where life takes you, and where it doesn't. That's the journey and it hasn't stopped."

Black LoveWhere some artists write from the head and others from the heart, Whigs' songwriter/front man Greg Dulli writes from the groin. His lyrics are filled with dark images of romantic obsession. Perhaps no other band can play with such restraint, letting musical tension build until it can do nothing other than explode. Dulli in his finest voice can move from desperate screams to a quiet sinister crooning at the turn of a chord.
Black Love was released in 1996 and further built on their trademark mix of Grunge, Indie Rock, Soul and Blues. The band lay out dark, raw Grungy grooves for Dulli to sing his twisted lyrics to; a perfect match. Now available on vinyl for the first time since 1996!1. Crime Scene Part One

Do To The Beast
2xLP 45 RPM 180g Vinyl With Gatefold Sleeve
Includes 16 Page Booklet
Do to the Beast is the first new album by The Afghan Whigs in over a
decade and a half. Founded in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1988, the band has
long stood out from its peers, with their savage, rapturous blend of hard
rock, classic soul, and frontman Greg Dulli's searing angst and obsessions.
The new album is both a homecoming - it marks their return to Sub
Pop, for whom the Whigs were the first signing from outside the label's
Northwest base - and a glimpse into the future of one of the most
acclaimed bands of the past twenty-five years.
Do to the Beast is an appropriately feral title for one of the most intense,
cathartic records of Dulli's entire career. It adds fresh twists to The
Afghan Whigs canon: there's the film noir storytelling of Black Love, the
exuberance of 1965, the brutal introspection of Gentlemen. However,
the album exudes a galvanized musical spirit and rhythmic heft that
suggest transcendence and hope amidst the bloodletting.
Recorded in L.A., New Orleans, Cincinnati, and Joshua Tree - a virtual
map of the band's past and present homes, the album features Whigs
co-founders Greg Dulli and John Curley, along with the core band of
guitarists Dave Rosser & Jon Skibic, multi-instrumentalist Rick Nelson,
and drummer Cully Symington. Also featured are soul iconoclast Van
Hunt, Mark McGuire (Emeralds), Johnny "Natural" Nagera (Usher's
musical director), Alain Johannes (Queens of the Stone Age, Arctic
Monkeys), Clay Tarver (Bullet LaVolta, Chavez), Dave Catching (QOTSA,
Eagles of Death Metal), among others.1. Parked Outside

Powder Burns (Awaiting Repress)Import
Powder Burns is the fourth Twilight Singers release from former Afghan Whigs singer Greg Dulli and it features guest appearances by Joseph Arthur, Ani DiFranco and old band-mate John Curley. Powder Burns strikes an immediate impression; songs like Theres Been An Accident, Underneath The Waves and Forty Dollars display Dullis song-writing perfectly; his lyrics, morose and uplifting in equal quantities, are complimented by his salient vocals. Dulli lets loose his spiralling tales of unyielding desires and personal regrets amid a wash of swirling guitars and string-driven orchestration. Beautifully arranged, the intricate production never gets the better of the songs themselves, always taking a back seat to the sentiment of the lyrics and Dullis swelling melodies. Recorded in New Orleans before Hurricane Katrina and mixed there after the hurricane, the album was produced by Mike Napolitano (Blind Melon, The Neville Brothers, Joseph Arthur, The Autumn Defense).1. Late Love (Discontinued) (On Sale)Wolves Like Us are without a doubt one of the most exciting bands of the moment at the forefront of the burgeoning Oslo music scene. Although barely a year in, they have already established themselves on the live circuit with a showcase at last year's legendary OYA Festival and recent touring with Kvelertak, Gallows, Purified In Blood and Blood Command.
With ex-members from such notable Norwegian acts as Amulet, Infidels Forever, JR Ewing and Silver, the band is no stranger to dedicated hard work. Drawing influences from artists such as Planes Mistaken For Stars, Drive Like Jehu, Hot Water Music and the Afghan Whigs, the mission is clear: Wolves Like Us are here to purvey the urgent, powerful music they love.
Wolves Like Us signed with Prosthetic Records at the beginning of 2011 and immediately began recording Late Love in Oslo with Ruben Willem (Haust/Caliban Studios). Mastering was handled by studio maestro Dave Collins (Soundgarden, Jane's Addiction) and acclaimed illustrator Justin Bartlett (Sunn O))), Kvelertak, Anti-Sweden Jeans) beautifully crafted the artwork.1. Along The WayFrom the mid-western underground consciousness, guitarist/producer Mark McGuire
emerges with his forthcoming 2014 Dead Oceans debut Along the Way. The conceptual
album details the inner journey of an individual seeking definition and enlightenment. For
those following McGuire's musical ascent thus far, the record is a culmination of a prodigious
and prolific artist.
Playing with a wide variety of instruments and styles on Along the Way, McGuire presents his
unique vision of modern psychedelia. Using electric and acoustic guitars, a Talkbox, drum
machines, a mandolin and lots in between, McGuire conducts a sonic exploration of the
inner self. "This story is an odyssey through the vast, unknown regions of the mind," he
explains in the liner notes," The endless unfolding of psychological landscapes, leading to
perpetual discoveries and expansions, in a genuinely emergent and infinite world of worlds."
Mark McGuire first came to national attention as part of Cleveland's drone collective
Emeralds, a band that single handedly created a paradigm shift toward the meditative in an
era of underground music best known for noise and chaos. Their albums for the Editions
Mego, No Fun and Hanson labels, among others, remain treasured to a generation of tape
collecting misfits. Over the course of many independent and self-releases the individual
members of the band exhibited their solo material from their earliest days. McGuire's first
solo release in 2006 showcased a natural affinity for melody, slowly disintegrating loops and
composition. When he kept audiences spellbound with live performances of his material it
made believers of concertgoers across the world. By 2009 his solo debut album Living With
Yourself was garnering praise from press and audiences alike. McGuire as a solo performer
made a direct connection with fans through his hypnotic playing, becoming more complex
in its dynamics and phrasings. The album's 2011 follow up Get Lost furthered the guitarist's
palate to include a sun-bleached digital effect. The music continually grew over itself as delays
decayed and new ones took their place, each layer revealing colors and sunspots, reflecting the
expanse of roads traveled.
The last few years have found McGuire touring with friends like Ducktails as well as
performing as a fifth member of the legendary Afghan Whigs, collaborating with artists like
Ponytail's Dustin Wong and releasing his own R&B influenced Road Chief project. 2014 will
bring more touring, more collaborations, more videos and media; expanding horizons that

The late Nashville songwriter Harlan Howard famously defined the ingredients of a great song as three chords and the truth. Every songwriter knows three chords, but laying bare the truth? Now that can be an altogether trickier affair. In January of 2012, The Gaslight Anthem piled into their old tour van and headed across the New Jersey state line for a 14 hour road trip to Nashville on their own quest for the truth. Their destination was 2806 Azalea Place, Nashville, Blackbird Studio, where the New Brunswick quartet had booked five weeks recording time with producer Brendan O'Brien (Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam, AC/DC). Their mission: to reconnect with rock 'n' roll in its most feral, pure, stripped-raw form.
Brian Fallon was thirteen years old when he discovered The Clash's self-titled debut album in the racks of Sound Effects Records in Hackettstown, New Jersey: the owner of the store promised the young teenager that the record would change his life. He wasn't wrong. But there was a time, not so very long ago, when The Gaslight's Anthem frontman had grown weary of the sound of electric guitars. After three albums of soulful, impassioned, hearts-on-fire punk rock, Sink Or Swim (2007), The '59 Sound (2008) and American Slang (2010), Fallon needed a change of pace, a change of scenery.
And so, in January of 2011, together with TGA guitar tech Ian Perkins, he formed The Horrible Crowes, a darkly melancholic side-project inspired by his love of The Afghan Whigs, Tom Waits and PJ Harvey. After the band's acclaimed debut album Elsie dropped in September, Fallon joined fellow punk rock troubadours Chuck Ragan, Dan Andriano (Alkaline Trio) and Dave Hause (The Loved Ones) on the acoustic Revival Tour, airing stripped-down versions of Gaslight Anthem and Horrible Crowes songs to packed rooms across Europe. And then he returned home to New Jersey and Gaslight, re-energized, renewed and ready to make a full-tilt rock 'n' roll record again.
After six weeks of that there's nothing you want to hear more than a Marshall stack turned all the way up, he says with a laugh. The result is Handwritten, the most committed, affecting and compelling album of The Gaslight Anthem's career to date. Introduced by muscular lead-off single 45, which received it's world premiere on BBC Radio 1 as Zane Lowe's Hottest Record In The World on April 30, it finds the Jersey boys in inspired form, decanting '60's soul, '70's stadium rock, '80s hardcore and '90's grunge into eleven white-knuckle, blue-collar everyman anthems. Fallon likens its incandescent electrical storms to Tom Petty songs (being) played by Pearl Jam. Put more simply, it's a supercharged American rock 'n' roll classic.
We've taken everything we do and gone to 10 with it, explains Fallon. This is definitely the Gaslight Anthem record I would want next, if I were a fan. American Slang was cool, but this sounds like a band who has plugged back into the electric socket again. I think these songs are the closest thing to what we should have always sounded like, adds guitarist Alex Rosamilia. We just hadn't figured out yet how to play it right.
Fallon credits Brendan O'Brien for capturing the raw, live-off-the-floor feel of Handwritten. Fine-tuned in the living room of the small rental house the band shared in Nashville, its eleven tracks were recorded with the whole band eyeball-to-eyeball in one room at Blackbird, vibing off one another's energy. The electricity in the recordings is tangible. Brendan taught us a ton about songwriting and recording as a band, Fallon notes. The whole experience was amazing. That's the guy that recorded Pearl Jam, that's the guy that recorded Bruce Springsteen, that's the guy that did Rage Against The Machine; and that's the guy you want to say 'It's good', because when he says it's good, that's when it's good.
The purity of O'Brien's stark, unadorned recording process served to inspire Fallon's approach to the lyrical themes on Handwritten too. Where previous Gaslight Anthem albums evoked deathless images of Americana, all Cadillacs, jukeboxes, Ferris wheels and wistful, romanticized vignettes of star-struck lovers disappearing into the great wide open, Handwritten is rooted in Fallon's own experiences, lending the record a more immediate, emotional edge. Now I am no angel but I got nothing to hide, the singer rasps on the brooding grunge-noir of Too Much Blood. Can you say the same thing for yourself tonight?
It's supposed to be a letter to whoever is listening, says Fallon. Like, this is what we got beat up by and maybe you did too. There's so many things that I just never wrote about, real personal stuff that I just wasn't ready to talk about yet. Now I think being an adult I have some reflection on it. We wanted to look back on the music that we first found when we were in high school. The truth is, if you're my age, you were listening to Peal Jam and Nirvana and Soundgarden. When that music came out these were guys that we could relate to. They weren't the biggest bands in the world by accident.
And it's no accident either that with Handwritten, the Gaslight Anthem themselves sound built to take on the world. After years paying their dues in the punk rock underground, their major label debut is assuredly the work of a young band who know their time is now. And their laidback, charismatic frontman is ready. I've always been ready for arenas, Fallon smiles. I've just been waiting for them to catch up to me. I want to play Giant Stadium, I always wanted to be a major label, major league band. If I can be the kid that's on the cover of Time magazine, I'll take it. And I'll buy you a drink while I'm at it.1. 45
