TownesSteve Earle's new album, Townes is his highly anticipated follow up to the Grammy Award winning album Washington Square Serenade. The 15 song set is comprised of songs written by Earle's friend and mentor, the late singer-songwriter, Townes Van Zandt.
The songs selected for Townes were the ones that meant the most to Earle and the ones he personally connected to. Some of the selections chosen were songs that Earle has played his entire career (Pancho and Lefty, Lungs, White Freightliner Blues). He learned the song (Quicksilver Daydreams of) Maria directly from Van Zandt and taught himself Marie and Rake specifically to include here. Earle recorded the New York sessions solo and then added the other instruments later on in order to preserve the spirit of Van Zandt's original solo performances to the best of his recollection. The track Lungs, was produced and mixed by the Dust Brothers' John King and features Tom Morello (Rage Against The Machine, The Nightwatchman) on electric guitar.

I picture a little town, like the one I grew up in, he says of the album's picturesque title. It's late in the afternoon. Sunset. Maybe some kids are playing baseball, and their family members are in the stands. You're at the point where the working week has given way to the weekend. That's my idea of sundown in heaven town.
Sundown Heaven Town pays tribute to those two decades, putting a new stamp on all of the sounds the revved-up country rockers, the nostalgic ballads, the down-home numbers that have made McGraw one of the best-selling country artists of the modern era.
From the banjo riff that kicks off the opening track, Overrated, to the digital percussion that pushes Lookin' for that Girl into pop-influence territory, Sundown Heaven Town mixes the old with the new, the rustic with the modern, the organic with the electric. It's a country record, in other words... with all the twists and turns we've come to expect from someone who's been at the top of the genre since 1994.
This album is very encompassing of everything that I've done in my career, McGraw explains. It's a good microcosm of what my 20 years in music has been. You can hear parts of my career throughout all these songs, as well as the future and where my music is headed.
Sundown Heaven Town also shines a light on the family, friends, and collaborators who've played roles in McGraw's career. His first cousin, Catherine Dunn, joins him on Diamonds Rings and Old Barstools, a classic-sounding country ballad about love on the rocks. His wife of 18 years, Faith Hill, lends her award-winning vocals to Meanwhile Back at Mama's, which doubles as the album's first chart-topper. Longtime friend Kid Rock makes an appearance, too, raising a rootsy ruckus on the bonus track Lincoln Continentals and Cadillacs.
I love being able to collaborate with great people, he says. To be in a place in your career where you can call up somebody like Keith Urban or Kid Rock and ask them to play or sing on a song with you, and they do it... How cool is that?
Several months before the album's release, McGraw launched the Sundown Heaven Town 2014 Tour, giving the singer a chance to perform some of the album's songs long before they hit stores. After spending countless summers on the road McGraw knew that his new songs deserved to be heard not only on the radio, or in a pair of fans' earbuds, but on stage. After all, there's an immediacy to Sundown's faster tunes, an anthemic vibe that owes just as much to the amphitheater as the honky tonk.
A family man and devoted husband, McGraw also shines a light on his softer side with tracks like Words are Medicine and Portland, Maine. He recorded his vocal parts for the latter song in just 10 minutes. The result is a wounded, wistful ballad, driven forward not by a drumbeat, but an acoustic guitar. McGraw may look larger than life while standing onstage... but when he sings about heartache, he sounds just as vulnerable as the rest of us. Maybe that's why he considers Portland, Maine one of the album's best songs, a difficult distinction to make on a record that spawned three hit singles before the album's release.
From start to finish, Sundown Heaven Town tips its cowboy hat to the traditions of country music, then tosses a some new ingredients into the mix. The result is a melting pot of everything Tim McGraw does best. It's a country album for 2014, anchored by a fondness for the genre and the desire to push it into uncharted territory. The album is the anticipated follow up to the Grammy Award winning 2009 release Townes. The 11- track set was produced by T Bone Burnett and is Earles first collection of original material since his 2007 Grammy Award winning, Washington Square Serenade.
Writing for Ill Never Get Out Of This World Alive began three years ago, the longest span of any song cycle in Steve Earles career. Still Crazy After All These Years (On Sale)The third new studio album of Paul Simon's post-Simon & Garfunkel career was a musical and lyrical change of pace from his first two, Paul Simon and There Goes Rhymin' Simon. Where Simon had taken an eclectic approach before, delving into a variety of musical styles and recording all over the world, Still Crazy found him working for the most part with a group of jazz-pop New York session players, though he did do a couple of tracks (My Little Town and Still Crazy After All These Years) with the Muscle Shoals rhythm section that had appeared on Rhymin' Simon and another (Gone at Last) returned to the gospel style of earlier songs like Loves Me Like a Rock. Of course, My Little Town also marked a return to working with Art Garfunkel, and another Top Ten entry for S&G. But the overall feel of Still Crazy was of a jazzy style subtly augmented with strings and horns. Perhaps more striking, however, was Simon's lyrical approach. Where Rhymin' Simon was the work of a confident family man, Still Crazy came off as a post-divorce album, its songs reeking of smug self-satisfaction and romantic disillusionment. At their best, such sentiments were undercut by humor and made palatable by musical hooks, as on 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover, which became the biggest solo hit of Simon's career. But elsewhere, as on Have a Good Time, the singer's cynicism seemed unearned. Still, as out of sorts as Simon may have been, he was never more in tune with his audience: Still Crazy topped the charts, spawned four Top 40 hits, and won Grammys for Song of the Year and Best Vocal Performance.

4th Street FeelingWhat's the 4th Street Feeling?
"4th Street is in Leavenworth," says Melissa Etheridge.
That's her home town in Kansas, pop. 35,000, known mostly for its prison and Army base.
And it's the place evoked in the title, and title song, of 4th Street Feeling, the 12th studio album of her singular, 25-year recording career.
"It's kind of the main drag, starting in the old downtown," she says of her old stomping grounds. "I remember the first McDonald's in town there. The town's pretty small. That's where we would hang out, the Burger King parking lot, the football games. Everything was on Fourth Street. That's where we would cruise. And then it turns into Highway 7 that goes out of town to Kansas City."
That's exactly where the album opens, with the bluesy, harmonica-spiced "Kansas City." The scene is set with Etheridge driving in "my old man's Delta 88," reliving road-trips fueled on "Lucky Charms, Tic Tacs and Mom's amphetamines." Only this time, the woman who left Leavenworth for Hollywood years ago is taking herself - and us - home. It's a trip to where she's from. But also a trip to where she's headed.
There are "all the untold lies of my misspent youth," as she sings in the funky coming-of-age tale "The Shadow of the Black Crow," a song in the storytelling tradition of such cherished artists as the Eagles and Bob Seger. There is the demand to "Be Real" ("You can't manufacture me, because I like it naturally"), a song in which she says she nods lovingly to the sultry, sexy soul of Rufus with Chaka Khan and Sly and the Family Stone. And she voyages into new territories of folky rock with the first single, "Falling Up," a joyful, upbeat track featuring her spirited recording debut on the banjitar, a hybrid banjo-guitar.
The fuel for this trek is her inner strength and confidence. In part it comes from recognition - 2011 has seen her awarded with a star on the Hollywood Boulevard Walk of Fame, and in the Fall of 2012 she will be honored by the National Women's Museum of Art in Washington, DC. But more so, if it comes from within.

'Truth Serum' was produced by Jeffreys with production support by James Maddock and Larry Campbell (Bob Dylan, Levon Helm), with backing from some of NYC's top session musicians: Steve Jordan (drums), Zev Katz (bass), Duke Levine (guitar) and Brian Mitchell (keys). Impressionistic and brimming with urgency, the album's ten songs grew out of material culled from over 75 unlabeled, cassette tapes - Jeffreys' preferred platform for capturing inspiration. "The obsessions, the imagery, the things I care most about were all on those cassettes," he says. "I love their compression and ragged feel."
Though Jeffreys has been releasing music since the 1960s, and recently celebrated his 70th birthday, he has never been busier or more prolific. "This record is a kind of Rorschach of me, the boiled down essence of where I am today," he explains. Delayed ReactionSoul Asylum is back and newly signed with 429 Records which will release their first album in six years, Delayed Reaction. This time around, the veteran band is energized with a recalibrated lineup that includes founders Dave Pirner and Dan Murphy alongside ex-Replacements, ex-Guns N' Roses bassist Tommy Stinson (who replaced original member Karl Mueller who passed away in 2006) and former Prince drummer Michael Bland.
Delayed Reaction, which was produced by the band and overseen by John Fields, bristles with the tightly wound, slightly ragged vibe that characterized the band when they emerged straight out of Minneapolis. The recording took place in various locations, beginning in Los Angeles and then relocating to New Orleans and Minneapolis and back to LA, each town giving the tracks a unique backdrop of local culture vibe.
Originally formed in 1983 in Minneapolis, MN, Soul Asylum has maintained their reputation for honest, heartfelt rock from their beginnings on scrappy local label Twin Tone (which concurrently nurtured the careers of seminal rockers the Replacements), through their commercially successful days on A&M and Columbia Records (where they scored a Grammy for the monster hit single "Runaway Train"). The band has persevered through the good times of garnering several platinum albums and accolades including a performance for the Presidential inauguration of Bill Clinton to enduring the personal tragedy of losing Karl Mueller to cancer six years ago.
Says Pirner on Delayed Reaction's recording process: "It feels like approaching it as an album and a thing that has a sequence, and a thing that is a piece of work in itself is almost an archaic process. The story behind the bent trumpet
It is just a few days since the accident that gave the career of the trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie a new boost and made the main figure of this captivating Jazz history appear that bit crazier, that bit more "Dizzier". At the end of the year 1953, according to the legend, Lorraine Gillespie, Dizzy's wife, was celebrating her birthday in Manhattan; there were a lot of musicians, dancers and actors present and, after performing for the birthday girl, Dizzy's trumpet was left lying unattended on the stage while the trumpeter was outside in front of the club giving an interview. The two dancing comedians "Stump & Stumpy" (Jimmy Cross and Eddie Hartman) were capering around the stage and one of them fell on the instrument and damaged it so that the bell was bent upwards at an angle of 45 degrees. Dizzy, the story continues, tried to play the mutilated instrument and noticed just how near to his ear his own sound suddenly was, nearer at least than with a normal trumpet. He had the damaged instrument repaired, but ordered a new trumpet from a manufacturer with exactly the same kink as the accident had caused.
If all of that is true, the first jazz recording in the archive of today's NDR was played either with the repaired trumpet or with a substitute instrument -Mister Gillespie, who came on the 9th of March 1953 with his quintet for a studio recording to Hamburg's studio 10(which at the time was merged with the Cologne broadcaster under the name of "Nordwestdeutscher Rundfunk" - NWDR), is not only wearing - even though there is no audience - a decorative Tyrolean hat like the popular singing comedian and EX-GI Billy Mo; the ornately decorated trumpet he plays has no kink, it is absolutely straight (as verified in the photos by Susanne Schapowalow). The "old" Dizzy, so to speak, becomes a prominent guest on this remarkable day in Hamburg, and the "new" Dizzy has just ordered his future trade mark from the trumpet manufacturer. "60 Years Jazz in the NDR" could hardly have kicked off more auspiciously.
In 1953 John Birks Gillespie is 36 years old and a world star in Jazz. Born in 1917 in the small town of Cheraw/South Carolina, the youngest of nine children, he is known in the scene as "Dizzy" because, alongside the inventors of bebop Charlie Parker and Bud Powell, he likes to play the mad intellectual with goatee beard, Basque beret and round sunglasses. He cultivates the role of provocateur, in 1964 he even stands for election as president of the USA. However, the history of bebop has already been written when he comes to Hamburg in the spring of 1953; now the time has come for Dizzy, the spirited oddball, to reinvent himself - until in 1968 with a grandiose big band at the Berlin Jazz Festival and from then on, again and again, he sets important milestones in a great career, including NDR concerts of course. He never switches styles and sounds as drastically as, for example, Miles Davis - Dizzy was always Dizzy - but ever new musical formations led up to the "United Nations Orchestra" with whom he guested in the last years before his death on 6 January 1993 all over the world including on northern German festival stages. As often as possible, the recording vans of NDR were always there.
In March 1953, Gillespie is accompanied by the baritone saxophonist Bill Graham, a musician who in the years beforehand had been part of the "Dee Gee Days", the "Savoy Sessions" (the album of this title became a classic of modern Jazz). Graham contributed not only magnificent solos in the sessions such as now in Hamburg; he also wrote "Oh-sho-be-do-be" a light-hearted ditty about the whispered conversations of young lovers which became a genuine classic in Gillespie's repertoire. At the piano in the Hamburg studio sits Wade Legge, barely thirty years old at the time, and one of the greatest but highly underestimated and unfortunately almost forgotten talents of the time. Legge's partner of many years, Lou Hackney, plays bass, and Al Jones is on percussion.
Among other places, this European tour also brought the band to Paris; they recorded five tracks on a stop at the Hamburg studio. Gershwin's "They Can't Take That Away From Me" and "Alone Together" by Arthur Schwartz and Howard Dietz are followed by two of those compositions laced with Latino rhythms that Dizzy had developed with the percussionist Chano Pozo and the arranger Gil Fuller: "Manteca" and "Tin-Tin-Deo". The short but extremely sweet program ends with "I Can't Get Started", a masterpiece for posterity written by Vernon Duke and Ira Gershwin.
The power of imagination is really not sufficient to conceive of the interaction of Gillespie's quintet with the other band in this studio session - or how on this 9th of March what was probably the most important modern quintet in the German-speaking world performed alongside Dizzy. Hans Koller had formed the band around himself. Koller was born in 1921 in Vienna. After time spent as an American prisoner of war, in 1946 he returned to his home city to found a Jazz club, and the saxophone sound he made his own influenced at least a generation. The trombonist Albert Mangelsdorff was not even 25 years old in March 1953, and it is not so long since he swapped the guitar for the trombone as a professional musician. Jutta Hipp is the pianist. Born in Leipzig in 1935, she was regarded as the greatest piano talent of her time; her career took off vertically, but ended abruptly and tragically shortly after she moved to the USA. She never played piano again and she never returned to Germany. She died in 2003 in New York, almost completely forgotten. Shorty Roeder on bass and the percussionist Karl Sanner are the top rhythmists of their age - and this band of twenty-somethings (Koller is the oldest at 32, and with a certain amount of bravado he christened them the "New Jazz Stars") is showing quite clearly that Jazz in Europe wants to and will take other paths than Dizzy in the motherland of the genre.
Koller selected some quite standard fare; "The Way You Look Tonight" is followed by "Indian Summer", "You Go to My Head" is followed by "All the Things You Are". Old friends, all very familiar - but the interpretation that the quintet gives these tracks is cooler than anything considered cool or fashionable up to then in the USA. What would have been going through Mr. Gillespie's keen mind when he heard just how uncompromisingly these young Krauts and Koller were advancing the renewal of music which had begun to develop further and beyond the Dizzy standard at home in the USA ?
Anyone in the NWDR studio in Hamburg on the 9th of March 1953 who could read minds would probably have witnessed an international dialogue, which has ever since repeatedly influenced the Jazz world. Call it stubborn redneck mettle, a well-developed case of who I am or just the fierce commitment to blaze a trail inherent to people from his home of Poyen, Arkansas. It doesn t mat ter why, just that the blazing sense of off the beaten path drives his album of the same name.
There s a strong vein of tenderness and decency holding Moore s kind of country together. Look no further than Rhett Atkins/Ben Hayslip/Ross Copperman-written Point At You, the lead single, that acknowledges every wild hair Moore has, but hits the bottom line of his goodness via the woman who became his bride.
Get loud, get rowdy, but get home and emerge solid family men dedicated to some basic ideals that have defined this country. One need look no further than The Warren Brothers/Lance Miller/Austin Cunningham-penned opener Old Back In The New School to understand Moore is all about the things that last, the wild times and the enduring values making for a way of life worth living.
It s that kind of edge that draws a singer like Miranda Lambert to duet on the somber heartbreaker Old Habits. A little bit rowdy, a little bit sentimental, a whole lotta roughneck, Moore has dented the country radio charts with three #1s in the anything but big city Small Town USA, the sentimental family embracing If Heaven Weren t So Far Away and the fidelity pledge Til My Last Day, in addition to the Top 10 mission declaration Backwoods.
But the hits don t really tell the whole story. To believe in values that last, to embrace what is enough and know it s more than plenty, that is the greatest truth for a man like Moore, who sees no reason to leave the place he grew up. The maturation of the Black Keys as record makers and performers has been both subtle and startling. With their 2008 Nonesuch release Attack & Release, the fifth album of their eight-year career which doubled the sales of their previous album and Nonesuch debut Magic Potion, guitarist Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney illustrated the durability of their few-frills sound, a mysterious and heavy brew of '70s-vintage rock, classic R&B and timeless, downhearted blues. Producer and pal Danger Mouse, their first outside collaborator, didn't try to reinvent their sound but further isolated its essence with the help of a few carefully chosen guest players and some retro-modern electronic gear. It didn't need to get slicker to get better, or, as the Boston Globe put it, Attack & Release proves that cleaning up the boys still won't stop them from tracking mud all over the house.
Danger Mouse returned to co-produce Tighten Up on Brothers, but for the most part, the duo was on its own, spending ten days at the legendary Muscle Shoals studio in Alabama and coming up with the an even more intensely focused, deeply soulful set that includes a cover of Jerry Butler's Never Gonna Give You Up. The performances are inventive and impassioned: Auerbach extends his vocal range to falsetto on lead-off track Everlasting Light and The Only One; Howlin' For You opens with a Gary Glitter-style drum riff and the chorus practically invites singing along. The tunes offer a surprising amount of lyrical candor and more than a little dark humor; the grooves alternate between ballsy swagger and bluesy rumination. The album reflects where Auerbach and Carney have been lately, most recently collaborating with a who's who of New York City MC's, including RZA, Q Tip, Mos Def and Raekwon on the 2009 BlakRocBlack Keys fan Damon Dash. They've also pursued projects on their own, Auerbach with his solo Keep It Hid album and tour, Carney with his band Drummer and its debut disc, Feels Good Together. Their maturation didn't happen just in the studio, though. Carney admits, Dan and I grew up a lot as individuals and musicians prior to making this album. Brothers was primarily cut in Muscle Shoals, a setting that turned out to have more in common with the Akron, Ohio factories where the Black Keys used to record. The place was desolate, the town depressed, so once again the duo slipped into a world all its own. They did additional recording at Auerbach's Easy Eye Sound System in Akron and The Bunker in Brooklyn. Musically, it's actually quite a good piece, but that title and chorus - what were you thinking Rob? Then there's 'Rock And Roll (In A Black Hole)', centered around a tedious, electronic syncopated drum beat. All signs lead to dull and dreary, but when this kicks in, it'll knock you on your ass! 'Theme For The Rat Vendor' is an unexpected 62-second instrumental immersed in middle-eastern sounds. Pulling a decapitated rabbit out of the hat, Zombie and cohorts John 5 on guitar, Piggy D on bass, and Ginger Fish on drums rock the shit out of GRAND FUNK RAILROAD's 'We're An American Band'; talk about a job well done! And if there really is a fallen angel in hell, Zombie will play 'Lucifer Rising' every night on tour. Bound to be a fan-favourite, this makes you move and groove uncontrollably; it's damn near irresistible. 'Trade In Your Guns For A Coffin' ends this illicit affair with the perfect amount of sex, sleaze and violence. Our dad often tells fans of The Avett Brothers that he is equally proud of our willingness to bale hay or feed the cows with him as he is of our career in music. It is a genuine affirmation, spoken often and with the storytelling flair of a learned yet grounded North Carolinian man of 70 (think Andy Griffith had he spent 35 years welding on Interstate bridges in the southern sun). He is proud of all three of us - the third being our sister, Bonnie. A woman possessing a creative mind, a lovely voice, and a kind heart, she has enthusiastically dedicated much of her life to the study and education of dance (while raising three children of her own). As a proud parent does, dad speaks about us often and with anyone who will listen (strangers possibly preferred). Years ago, this was a source of great exasperation for me. I could not understand or appreciate our dad's motivation or his seemingly infinite willingness to initiate conversations about us, to build us up, to champion us. This was, of course, before I had a son of my own. Now I, the last of my siblings to join the joyful and bleary-eyed ranks of parenthood, gratefully see why this has been (and continues to be) the case. Having a child is a little like falling in love, in its specialness and in its universal ability to shift the meaning of life. I now understand, as my brother, sister, and parents have for years, that when that interior levee breaks and the reservoir of untapped love fills your heart, you are introduced immediately and absolutely to your new favorite subject of conversation.
Jim Avett is a natural-born storyteller. You shouldn't expect to have a seat at the dining room table with the man and have a conversation relegated to small talk and light commenting on current events. It's more probable (by a long shot) that between loading forkfuls of green beans, you'll seamlessly find yourself learning about a World War II submarine battle and the subsequent shark attack. Or a Victorian-era train conductor. Or the little-known backstory about the real life of the DiCaprio-played character in The Revenant. Our dad reads a lot, and his knowledge paired with a great wealth of life experience makes him a person that people like to listen to. The man can be hilarious, but there is a certain pace, depth, and gravity present in his manner of imparting information that is rare. This quality has increasingly shone through in his singing over the last decade. Texturally and spiritually, it fits like a glove over the weathered and beautiful hand of the traditional hymn.
Gospel music is more than a genre with a unifying theme. In our case, it is a vehicle for spending time together. And the longer we are on this earth, the more we realize how important it is to carve out some of that precious time for each other. Our parents make these efforts often, with obvious love and devoted interest in what is happening in our lives. Truth be told, dad probably cared just as much about getting all of us together as he did about the album we were making. The recordings were certainly made with a lot of care, as we all genuinely love the old gospel songs, but I'm willing to bet my father would've recorded any kind of album if it meant a few sunny afternoons with all three of his children. This is a sentiment that we all can thankfully grasp now with great personal clarity.
Jim Avett was raised by a soft-spoken Methodist minister and a dedicated mother with (very) above average skills when seated at the piano. Between their living influence, our parents love and care, and a glowing sense of community provided by our small town church, this record was an inevitability.
For my siblings and me, the prospect of recording an album together gave us an opportunity to add something to the family photo album a document so our children and their own will always have another little connection to their kin (a link in the chain, as Dad says). On this occasion, it is the sound we made with our father when we sang together in the living room.
This piece you are reading now was written for the purpose of announcing an album. I'm writing it so folks will know the album exists and so they may hear it and hopefully enjoy it. Maybe it sells a few copies. Maybe it doesn't. But something else is possible here; perhaps this could be a reminder to you, whoever you are and however you came to lay your eyes on these words, that you have an opportunity. Have you set up your camera and filmed a conversation with your mother, your father, your kids, your great-aunt? Could you, this week, ask an elder of your own blood what it was like for them growing up? What's their favorite Christmas memory? What was their town like? How did they first fall in love? Imagine what it will be like for family members to see a hundred years from now... or two hundred! You have in your hands the ability to gift a priceless treasure to loved ones you will never meet but love just the same. These kinds of efforts are made so the little ones, a long time from now, will have an easier path to familial strength, and a bridge to knowing who and where they are from. Maybe you could sing some songs together...

Throughout the 12 songs, pretty much every aspect of Zombie's musical career is touched upon; Venomous Rat Regeneration Vendor is almost like a Greatest Hits comprised of entirely new material. First single 'Dead City Radio And The New Gods Of Super Town' is a fiery, barn-burner of a track highlighting "wasted youth - an angel of odd in her birthday suit." That being said, the award for worst song title of the year goes to 'Ging Gang Gong De Do Gong De Laga Raga'. Musically, it's actually quite a good piece, but that title and chorus - what were you thinking Rob? Then there's 'Rock And Roll (In A Black Hole)', centered around a tedious, electronic syncopated drum beat. All signs lead to dull and dreary, but when this kicks in, it'll knock you on your ass! 'Theme For The Rat Vendor' is an unexpected 62-second instrumental immersed in middle-eastern sounds. Pulling a decapitated rabbit out of the hat, Zombie and cohorts John 5 on guitar, Piggy D on bass, and Ginger Fish on drums rock the shit out of GRAND FUNK RAILROAD's 'We're An American Band'; talk about a job well done! And if there really is a fallen angel in hell, Zombie will play 'Lucifer Rising' every night on tour. Bound to be a fan-favourite, this makes you move and groove uncontrollably; it's damn near irresistible. 'Trade In Your Guns For A Coffin' ends this illicit affair with the perfect amount of sex, sleaze and violence. Offered here for the first time ever on vinyl, Workbench Songs was originally released on CD in 2006. It represented Guy Clark's 10th studio release and continued his legacy as one of the most critically acclaimed Texas songsmith's of our time. Guy Clark dominates the discussion with his opinion on Townes Van Zandt whenever it comes to talking about who is the one plus ultra Texas songwriter. He has a point, of course, but if Townes is No. 1, Clark is No. 1A. Workbench Songs goes a mighty long way to proving that true. It's not just another collection of his finely crafted songs, his first for a new label. It's one of the best albums of his career. Drogas LightA decade after Lupe Fiasco exploded onto the hip-hop scene with his seminal 2006 debut Food & Liquor, the Chicago native is closing the chapter on his career with his most visualized projects yet. The independent rapper, who parted ways with his former label Atlantic Records following the release of 2015's Tetsuo & Youth, hits his creative peak with a trilogy of albums-Drogas Light, Drogas and Skulls-the final curtain call on one of the most gifted lyricists and visionaries to grace the mic.
If anything, Drogas Light, the first delivery to fans arriving in early 2017 via 1st & 15th/Thirty Tigers, is a testament to Fiasco's artistic growth throughout the years. The 14-track LP is free of restraint, and daring by his standards: the sonic and storytelling palettes are vast and diverse, more so than ever before, traipsing genre and style with ease and touting songs to soundtrack everything from a night at the club to a quiet listen on headphones. Where Tetsuo & Youth leaned into more experimental pastures, Drogas Light is the embodiment of a musician whose foray beyond the boundaries of hip-hop feels increasingly natural, a glimpse into the genius that will be Fiasco's legacy as he inevitably walks away from the spotlight.
From the start of Drogas Light, Fiasco lays his rhyming skills bare, attacking a haunted beat accented by a screwed vocal sample on opener "Dopamine" that self-reflectively emphasizes the magnetism of the album ("Over-d off of this, but don't fall asleep 'til the dopamine hit!" he chants). The set is dotted with several trap-inflected songs-"NGL" featuring Ty Dolla $ign is a turn-up anthem that entertains the reasons why success comes slow to many, while the STREETRUNNER-produced lead single "Made in the USA" catalogues the various home-grown, illicit products manufactured in the country.
Fiasco has often been pegged as a socially conscious emcee, likened to peers including Common and Nas, and he lives up to the reputation on "City of the Year," where he explores the economic disparity of Chi-town. He flexes his storytelling muscle on the hypnotic, spinning "Jump," on which he unfolds the tale of going from a "trapper to a rapper" by supplying a female adversary with a career boost. But it's when the album hits the relax button that Drogas Light coasts on cushy grooves: "Kill," also featuring Ty Dolla $ign, is an after-hours ode to women who work at gentleman's clubs, and the vamping closer "More Than My Heart" is an emotionally charged hat-tip to all the mothers who would sacrifice anything for their children.
While Drogas Light signifies the beginning of the end for Fiasco, it represents how far he's come since he first entered the game and merely accents the intellectual breadth of the discography he'll leave behind. At the onset of career, rappers including Jay Z and Kanye West regarded him as the future of hip-hop, with the latter tapping him for a standout guest verse on "Touch the Sky" after Fiasco remixed West's hit "Diamonds from Sierra Leone." His debut album Food & Liquor earned him three Grammy nominations and a win for the Jill Scott-assisted "Daydreamin'," which netted the trophy for Best Urban/Alternative Performance in 2008.
In the years since, he evolved from the backpack rap of his debut with a string of classics including 2007's Lupe Fiasco's The Cool and 2011's Lasers, a prelude to the following year's Food & Liquor II: The Great American Rap Album Pt. 1.
