From Detroit comes Timmy Vulgar fronting his troupe of merry art-punks, Human Eye. An anomaly on the current music scene, the band defies all description and genres and is easily one of the most original out there. Musically they reflect mid-western proto-punk and overall spaced-out weirdness. Recorded live at Third Man Records on September 23, 2011 direct-to-analog tape and pressed on 12 vinyl.

"Prominence" is the 2nd full length in as many years from Texas transplant John Pena. It was recorded/mixed in the same apartment(after a failed attempt to mix in a "real" studio) as last years talent over the first few months of 2013 after shelving a full length's worth of songs for not being sonically or emotionally interesting enough.

Using Primitive Radio God's "Standing Outside A Broken Telephone Booth With Money In My Hand" as a sonic touch point John built a new album from the ground up utilizing chopped/sampled drum breaks and, for the first time, some non laptop based keyed instruments(piano, mellotron) along with h.B. Main stays classical guitar and steel drums.
Live member Christian Barsi and Daniel Schlett of Strange Weather Studio both contributed keys to a few songs but the outcome is still a very solo sounding project.

Arrangements is where Prominence shines. Managing to sound inventive and not quite like anything else with such a limited palette is a rare and commendable feat. From the
Slide guitar and pulsing nylon string samples of "Honest" to the flamingo call and deep kick combo of the 2nd half of "Complete" Heavenly Beat keeps the whole affair sounding fresh, interesting and natural.

Lyrically, Prominence is not an escapist affair. It's a very direct look into someone dealing with poor body image(Thin), infidelity(Honest) and emotional/physical/sexual recklessness(Prominence). It's not asking or answering any questions. Just existing within itself, fully a where of it's shortcomings.

    Tawk Tomahawk

Hiatus Kaiyote is the sound of serendipity. Every so often a band comes along that captures the collective imagination, a band that has all the essential elements in place to become a musical movement.

The music of Hiatus Kaiyote strikes the perfect note merging poetry and polyrhythms. Hiatus Kaiyote has a style that can't be easily pinpointed. Stevie Wonder, Otis Redding, Tupac Shakur, Flying Lotus, traditional flamenco and music from Mali and Colombia have influenced the group. We could call it 'Future Soul'.

On the band's debut album Tawk Tomahawk (2012) it's as if the vast desert landscape has opened up, borrowing ingredients from far-reaching lands to concoct a distinctive flavor that is the essence of all its parts. Each song whispers of delicious, ancient stories untold.

Stereogum singled out Hiatus Kaiyote as a Band to Watch. Gilles Peterson named them the Breakthrough Artist of 2013. Questlove and Erykah Badu have gone out of their way to promote the band. There's been so much support from the community of musicians locally and internationally. As a musician that's what it's about, as lead singer Nai Palm put it. Here and Nowhere Else

On their third full-length, Cleveland-bred outt Cloud Nothings give joy
a hard, sharp edge. I was feeling pretty good about everything so I just
made stuff that made me happy, says founding member and
mild-mannered chief songwriter Dylan Baldi of Here and Nowhere Else.
I had nothing to be angry about really so the approach was more
positive and less 'fuck everything.' I just sat down and played until I
found something that I like, because I was nally in a position to do

Utilizing every possible opportunity to write while on the road for 18
consecutive months following the release of 2012's Attack on Memory,
Baldi presented an album's worth of new material to his bandmates with
just days before they'd enter the studio with esteemed producer John
Congleton. I'm pretty sure every song was written in a different
country, he says. It's the product of only having a couple of minutes
here and there. But Cloud Nothings would enjoy a full week with
Congleton at Water Music in Hoboken, New Jersey, followed by three
days of mixing at his own studio in Dallas shortly thereafter. The result is
Cloud Nothings, rened: impossibly melodic, white-knuckle noise-rock
that shimmers with sumptuous detail, from Baldi's lone, corkscrewing
guitar to his dramatically improved singing to bassist TJ Duke's
piledriving bass lines and drummer Jayson Gerycz's volcanic lls.

It's more subtle, says Baldi. It's not just an in-your-face rock record.
There's more going on. You can listen to a song 20 times and still hear
different little things in there that you didn't notice before. Every time I
listen I notice something that I didn't even realize we did.

It's yet another staggering show of a progress from a songwriter and
band still coming into their own.

    The Sound Of Sonny

The Sound Of Sonny marks a new phase in Sonny Rollins' career. At the time of the album's recording in 1957, the tenor saxophone legend was reaching
the height of his powers, having been proclaimed Down-Beat Magazine Critics' Poll New Star of the tenor saxophone that very same year. Joined by a
variety of accompaniment (Sonny liked to shake it up!), including pianist Sonny Clark, drummer Roy Haynes and bassists Percy Heath and Paul
Chambers, Rollins attains a level of freedom in his soloing and rhythmic interplay that only serves to underscore his melodic brilliance. A landmark
recording in the development of one of Jazz's true giants of the tenor saxophone, The Sound Of Sonny is a canonical smooth bop LP and an underrated

    Italian Movie Soundtracks

Chet Baker had a long and complicated relationship with Italy. It was a country where he was both imprisoned and adored. His first visit there took place in 1955, during his first successful European tour. It was during this tour that the quartet's pianist, the talented Dick Twardzik, tragically died in Paris from a heroin overdose. Baker was devastated, and following Twardzik's death - for which he felt some level of responsibility - the trumpeter submerged himself in the drug world and in a self-destructive spiral which would last for the rest of his life. Baker would stay in Europe for a number of months after Twardzik's death, playing with different local musicians.

Baker made his way back to New York in mid-1956 and wouldn't return to Italy until the 1959 trip that yielded the recordings included here. In fact, as Ezio Leoni (the musician in charge of the sessions) explained that Chet's trip to Milan took place in order to make two albums (one with strings and orchestra, the other with a small combo of Italian players). Baker was already an addict when the contract was signed, and before he could travel he was imprisoned in the States. Therefore, the sessions had to be postponed and shortly after this music was recorded Baker would be imprisoned again, this time in Italy. Prior to his Italian imprisonment he made the two albums expected of him and recorded some interesting tracks for movie soundtracks with different bands conducted by Piero Umiliani, which are presented on this LP. All of that music is also contained here, including a vocal version of "Arrivederci" which has been taken from the original movie itself and, for that reason, has some odd overdubbed dialogues in Italian.

    Stand Back (Pure Pleasure)

Vanguard may have spelled his name wrong (he prefers Charlie or Charles), but the word was out as soon as this solo debut was released: Here was a harpist every bit as authentic, as emotional, in some ways as adventuresome, as Paul Butterfield. Similarly leading a Chicago band with a veteran Black rhythm section (Fred Below on drums, Bob Anderson on bass) and rock-influenced soloists (keyboardist Barry Goldberg, guitarist Harvey Mandel), Musselwhite played with a depth that belied his age - only 22 when this was cut! His gruff vocals were considerably more affected than they would become later (clearer, more relaxed), but his renditions of Help Me, Early in the Morning, and his own Strange Land stand the test of time. He let his harmonica speak even more authoritatively on instrumentals like 39th and Indiana (essentially It Hurts Me Too sans lyrics) and Cha Cha the Blues, and his version of jazz arranger Duke Pearson's gospel-tinged Cristo Redentor has become his signature song - associated with Musselwhite probably more so than with trumpeter Donald Byrd, who originally recorded the song for Blue Note. Goldberg is in fine form (particularly on organ), but Mandel's snakey, stuttering style really stands out - notably on Help Me, his quirky original 4 P.M., and Chicken Shack, where he truly makes you think your record is skipping

    About Pure Pleasure

At the beginning of the 90s, in the early days of audiophile vinyl re-releases, the situation was fairly straightforward. Companies such as DCC, Mobile Fidelity, Classic Records and, of course, Pure Pleasure all maintained a mutual, unwritten ethical code: we would only use analogue tapes to manufacture records.

During the course of the present vinyl hype, many others have jumped on the bandwagon in the hope of securing a corner of the market. Very often they are not so ethical and use every imaginable source to master from: CDs, LPs, digital files, MP3s - or employed existent tools from the 80s and 90s for manufacturing.

A digital delay is gladly used when cutting a lacquer disc because tape machines with an analogue delay have become quite rare and are therefore expensive. When cutting the lacquer, the audio signal is delayed by one LP revolution against the signal, which controls the cutter head, and for this a digital delay is very often employed. Of course, the resultant sound signal is completely digital and thus only as good as this delay.

We should like to emphasize that Pure Pleasure Records on principle only uses the original master tape as the basis for the entirely analogue cutting of lacquer discs. In addition, the pressing tool is newly manufactured as a matter of principle.

We only employ existing tools for manufacturing if an improved result is not forthcoming, e.g. the title Elvis Is Back, which was mastered by Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray, or several titles from our Philips Classics series, which in any case Willem Makkee cut from the original masters at the Emil Berliner Studios in the 90s. It goes without saying that we only used the mother and that new tools were made for our production.

To put it in a nutshell: we can ensure you that our releases are free from any kind of digital effects and that the lacquer discs are newly cut.
