    Human

On HUMAN, Three Days Grace re-teamed with producer Gavin Brown who produced the band's platinum-selling 2003 self-titled debut album. "We went back to our roots a bit and recaptured that collaborative feeling of being in a band and bringing out the best ideas in each other," says band member Neil Sanderson. "Gavin was a huge part of that in the beginning and we feel like we're back in those days where we're high-fiving each other with guitars in our hands." In addition, Nick Raskulinecz and Chris Lorde Alge mixed HUMAN. The band has spent much of the year vigorously touring, writing and recording their new album.

Three Days Grace is Matt Walst (lead vocals), Neil Sanderson (drums, piano, backing vocals), Brad Walst (bass guitar), and Barry Stock (lead guitar). The band holds the record with now 13 #1 singles at Active Rock Radio, more than any other band in history and has sold over 6 million albums in the United States. The band's first single on HUMAN with new singer Matt Walst "Painkiller" celebrates their 12th #1 single and "I Am Machine" is their #13th number one and second single with Matt as their lead singer.

    Five Pillars Of Soul

These are troubled times. Troubled enough, that you don't need us to talk about it. But if there was ever a time to make a break, or to find a way out, it is now. That is why we, John Wilkes Booze, are here with five stories of honest life scorching Soul, a starter plan if you will, that should set the fire in your feet to get up and move in all directions.

First off, John Wilkes Booze are six spirit fuelled, R&B players from South Central Indiana -- Bloomington to be exact. And by rhythm and blues, we are talking about Hoosier R&B: warbly and frantic falsetto vocals backed by electric bass, organ, drums, and dual guitars with the frequent ecstatic spurts of trumpet, saxophone and electronics. We come from the very soil that birthed JJ Johnson, MX-80 Sound, Phil Niblock, Dancing Cigarettes, and the Gizmos. Add it up, and we're there. As obsessive collectors of the raw and esoteric, we've taken our flotsam of films, books, and vinyl collections and transfused them into a sound not far from the orbits of our garage or El Saturn, nor from intellectual dissections and analysis of these modern times.

    House Arrest

Sure The Doldrums and Worn Copy had some hits and humdingers on them, but Ariel Pink's 2002 album House Arrest never lets up. Its hit after hit after hit. Sorta like if you listened to your friends boom box mix tape from Top 40 radio around 1985.

Think you've heard enough Ariel Pink? Well our favorite omnivorous media junkie from LA still has a few tricks left up his sleevelike the left-of-center House Arrest. Sure The Doldrums and Worn Copy had some hits and humdingers on them, but House Arrest never lets up. It's hit after hit after hit. Sorta like if you listened to your friend's boom box mix tape from Top 40 radio around 1985. Some people might think that sounds like a recipe for disaster. We say bring on the Doritos.

Originally released in 2002 as part of a split double-CD set, then re-released with a couple of bonus tracks (including the multipart epic Netherlands) in 2006, House Arrest, much like every other Ariel Pink release so far, provides a small sampling of Ariel Rosenberg's self-recorded compositions, laid down on a trusty eight-track at home. Unlike so many warbling troubadours who seem to think the recorded-in-a-bedroom approach means a license to be maudlin, Rosenberg brings an exuberant joy to his work, finding something that a full band recording might actually kill the spirit of. The queasy tones and gently distanced verses of the opening Hardcore Pops Are Fun is instant put-a-smile-on-your-face stuff, helping to set the tone for the whole collection. The demented synth pop merriment of Flying Circles suggests an '80s nugget swathed in psychedelic haze, a gentle breeziness apparent on many other songs like the giddy Every Night I Die at Miyagis or the nervous funk of Alisa, easily one of the best songs on the album thanks to some exquisite vocals in particular. Though his connection to personal hero R. Stevie Moore is often mentioned, Rosenberg's role model here often seems to be Andy Partridge instead -- check out the distinctly XTC-like hiccupping on Gettin' High in the Morning, not to mention the quick herky-jerk arrangements. Rosenberg's preference to add layers of echo on his voice means sometimes his lyrics only emerge in fits and starts, but when they do they often are wryly witty or amusingly theatrical -- it fits with the amusing rock pose on the back cover, a knowing embrace of a trope. So when he sings about how West Coast calamities are worth more than the East Coast variety or how he's one of those egomaniacs who just want to siiiing, who's to deny how he plays around with the ideas?

    Mid Dream

Mike Sempert is best known for his work as the songwriter and frontman of the Bay Area band Birds & Batteries. After years of recording and touring, Sempert decided to take a break from the band to focus on other aspects of life. He got a dog, moved to Los Angeles, and married his longtime love. Inevitably, a new collection of songs came together, many of them centered around these changes and the questions creative people often face as they stare into the oblivion of adulthood.

With Dannie Richmond on drums and Hampton Hawes on piano (Sonny Clark plays only on I Can't Get Started) these 1957 NYC recordings represent Charles Mingus' trio lineup at its absolute best. Don't forget this is the year when East Coasting, Tijuana Moon and A Modern Jazz Symposium were released, proving 1957 to be an incredibly inspiring year for the man who reinvented double bass as a front line instrument. Remarkable in the trio formation are Mingus' powerful solos and hectic dialogues with Richmond's drumming.

Ranked 262/500 on Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

The Grateful Dead's first seminal release of 1970 finds the band in an uncharacteristic acoustic setting paying homage to their country, blues and folk roots. Featuring concise songs and tighter arrangements, the timeless Workingman's Dead exhibits the band's true essence as American songwriters of the highest order and that their restless ambition existed in the studio as much as it did in concert. Workingman's Dead introduced such all-time Dead classics as Uncle John's Band and Casey Jones among others.

After a 5 year hiatus, Canadian electronic music producers MSTRKRFT (Jessi F. Keeler & Al-P) are back. Driven by distorted drum beats, hauntingly hypnotic synths, and booming cinematic soul, OPERATOR immediately captivates. "It's probably the most acurate reflection of how we work on stage," says Jesse. "We had to be very creative with very few elements. It took time to figure that out".

2011 was the last time we heard from MSTRKRFT with the release of the single "BACK IN THE USSA", following their Juno Award-winning debut album THE LOOKS in 2006. MSTRKRFT have released official remixes for everybody from KATY PERRY and KYLIE MINOGUE to WOLFMOTHER, Justice and Bloc Party. 2009's FIST OF GOD boasted collaborations with the likes of John Legend, Ghostface Killah, E-40, N.O.R.E., Lil' Mo and more as it predicted an eventual crossover between hip-hop and electronic music on the horizon.

Warbringer has continued to evolve throughout its 4 albums into the most lethal band in thrash, and delivers a monumental 5th record in Woe to the Vanquished. Taking the more progressive and ambitious leanings of Empires Collapse and tempering them with pure, unrelenting violence. The result is a unique hybrid strain of thrash and extreme metal that ranges from all-out speed assaults such as Woe To The Vanquished and Shellfire to the biggest song the band has ever done, the 11-minute When The Guns Fell Silent. As much as I'd love to relay all kinds of anecdotes about the challenges Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray encounter during the mastering sessions, I witness none. Lou Donaldson's undisputed masterpiece, Blues Walk, marks the point where the altoist began to decisively modify his heavy Charlie Parker influence and add a smoky, bluesy flavor of his own. The material is still firmly in the bebop style, and the mellower moments aren't as sleepy as some of Donaldson's subsequent work, so the album sounds vital and distinctive even as it slows down and loosens things up. What elevates Blues Walk to classic status is its inviting warmth. Donaldson's sweetly singing horn is melodic throughout the six selections, making even his most advanced ideas sound utterly good-natured and accessible. The easy-swinging title cut is arguably Donaldson's signature tune even above his late-'60s soul-jazz hits, and his other two originals, Play Ray and Callin' All Cats, are in largely the same vein.

Considered one of the great young pianists of the mid-to-late 1950s, Sonny Clark was practically the house pianist at Blue Note during 1957-62 before his tragically early death in 1963 when he was just 31. He began his career playing and recording with Teddy Charles and Wardell Gray in the early 1950s. Inspired by Bud Powell, he made a particularly strong impression during his period with clarinetist Buddy DeFranco's group. He also worked with Dinah Washington, Serge Chaloff and Sonny Criss in addition to leading his own trio. But he is most famous for his work for Blue Note In addition to leading seven albums for the label, Clark was on many sessions as a sidemen, uplifting every date with his adventurous and swinging playing. His playing was full of joyful discoveries, constant swing, and an optimistic creativity that was indescribable and quite infectious. Cool Struttin,' the pianist's most famous and rewarding album, features Sonny Clark in a quintet with altoist Jackie McLean, trumpeter Art Farmer, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Philly Joe Jones. On this 1958 gem, Clark is featured on four lengthy performances, including Miles Davis "Sippin' At Bells" and the exotic "Deep Night." The music is filled with magical moments where the five musicians seem to think and create like one. The greatest jazz performances include moments like those heard on "Cool Struttin'" where the music has a life of its own beyond the individual players. The more one plays this superb album, the more it is obvious that this is one of the truly essential Blue Note recordings.

All My Friends Are Funeral Singers

Califone's releases are full of layers and textures, offering endless depth, entire universes to lose yourself in, and beyond the thick spectrum of sound, they do something even more important: they write great songs that will stand the test of time. The band is at the peak of its powers on All My Friends Are Funeral Singers, its sixth song based album. The long-awaited follow-up to 2006's acclaimed Roots and Crowns, the album is the strongest collection of songs in a career with no shortage of strength. The subtlety and detail of Califone's previous work is present here; the atmospheres are carefully nuanced, the percussion is both rattling and melodic, and the melodies are rich and soulful.

All My Friends Are Funeral Singers is a dense collage of sounds, expertly formed into fully realized pop songs and it's the record that the great Roots and Crowns hinted at. The songwriting is fleshed out, the musical vision is boiling over, the sonic experimentation is indulgent and dense, yet there's a great cohesion, a sense of purpose and a newfound focus to this Califone effort. Never has the band felt so vibrant and so alive!

This double LP edition contains music exclusive to the vinyl edition of the release on side 4.

    Fire Away

Fire Away is the Grammy Award-winning bands fifth studio full length. Produced by acclaimed producer Tony Berg, Fire Away features eleven new Ozomatli songs, including the first single Its Only Paper, currently being serviced to radio. Ozomatlis music, a collision of hip hop and salsa, dancehall and cumbia, samba and funk, merengue and comparsa, East LA R&B and New Orleans second line, Jamaican ragga and Indian raga, has long followed a key mantra: it will take you around the world by taking you around the city of LA.

This certainly resonated with producer Tony Berg (Aimee Mann, Pete Yorn), who describes working with Ozomatli like visiting seven continents simultaneously. Berg believes the Fire Away sessions captured the spirit of the bands live show without being a live album, and he sensed Ozomatli stretching themselves in the studio, adding each of the members had grown as a writer and as a musician. I think Fire Away reflects their true songwriting talents, everyones point-of-view was captured. That is the spirit of Ozomatli. Theyre pan-cultural, and they somehow manage to be raucous and thoughtful at the same time.
